[xk] Toolkit pictures, questions

Dave,

Congratulations on the find! I’ve gone through similar trials, trying to
determine the correct tool sets for my two XK140’s. Roger Payne has
published an exhaustive series of articles in the “XK Gazette” detailing the
differences between tool kits from the various XK models. This has been very
helpful to me and I wish there was a way to be able to post his articles.

One way to determine which model your tool kit came from would be to look at
the brand of open ended spanner. According to Roger, the “Garrington”
spanner was used in all XK140 and some XK150 cars. “T/W” brand spanners were
sourced by Jaguar from 1959 to 1961. “SSP” brand spanners were used with the
E-Type. All three types were labled “Jaguar” on the reverse side from the
brand name.

Also, the correct XK140 screwdriver should have a fixed flat blade. The
interchangeable Phillips blade came in with the E-Type.

The beautiful King Dick adjustable spanner that you found predates the
XK140, to the best of my knowledge. It may be XK120 vintage.

I hope this helps.

Subject: [xk] Toolkit pictures, questions

I swear we should dedicate a separate forum to XK tools, but I’ll
pollute the XK forum with more tool tales.

Tools were missing when I bought my XK140 15 years ago. A couple
years back, I (innocently) bought a ‘‘complete original’’ toolkit on
Ebay from an overseas source. From 20 feet, illuminated by a 20-
watt bulb, they sure looked good, but there wasn’t one correct tool
in the bunch. Lesson learned.

In a rare stroke of luck, the fellow doing my bodywork handed me a
toolkit, which can be seen at the link below:

Yesterday, I found yet another tool at a local sale, which is shown
at the bottom of the link above.

So, knowning this has been discussed ad nauseum, what’s missing and
what’s extraneous (for a 1957 XK140MC OTS)? I believe I need:

  1. Tecalemit grease gun (plain top? blue dot?)
  2. Bleeder tin (Lockheed? Dunlop?)
  3. Timing gauge (TDC on camshaft)
