Brian, Waltzing Matilda was a poem written by A. B. (Banjo) Paterson, an
Australian Bard of note. The term "waltzing refers to walking and “matilda”
is the load the man carries, in this case his bedroll or “swag” in which his
clothes, food (tucker) are rolled. The story is of a “swagman” a person
travelling from town to town without any means of transport but to walk,
seeking work, set in pre 1900. He grabs a sheep (a jumbuck) from a farmers
field and starts to cook some meat when down come the troopers (mounted
policemen), to escape he jumps into the billabong (water hole) where his
ghost resides to this day. At some point in history it was set to the tune
of a (I think) a Scottish Ayre and has (wether we like it or not) become our
national song.

Can anyone elaborate on what is meant by “waited till his billy boiled”?
