[xk] XK 150 Gearshift Lever Question

Fellows, I am having trouble with the bent gearshift lever on my xk 150. It turns when I try to shift the gears. I have tightened the nuts as much as I can but without success. Would new rubber bushings help or should I just install a straight lever?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Jon with the proper (fresh) shift bushes and the nut tightened you
would have a hard time moving it–change them and remember there is
a reason the lever is bent!–

Jon,
I replaced the 2 bushings in my 150 lever & the rest of the washers
associated with the gear lever, when I cleaned up the top of my trans. Get some good
rubber grease -cause they don’t go in easy. I had to cut off 5mm on one
bushing to get it all the way in to be able to get the washer & nut back on. Once
it’s secured, you’re not going to be able to turn it so position it right
before you tighten the nut. The tread is 5/16 x 22 in case you loose the nut.

Regards, Otto M.

I also had problems with my cranked lever gradually turning all the time. Turned out it had no splines cut on the base of the shaft where the rubber bushes grip it. I replaced it with a straight one, which I actually find quite pleasant in use. I know it was supposed to have been installed by Jaguar if a radio was originally fitted, but as my car had a radio retro-fitted at Jaguar in 1951, I felt it was OK to use the straight lever, even though the radio is long gone…
