[xk] XK-50 2800 rpm buzz

I have noticed a very annoying buzz that starts at 2700 rpm,
peeks at 2800 and is basically gone at 2900 rpm. It is very
difficult to tell whether it is coming from the engine
compartment or some other area. The car does not transmit
any vibration, it’s only the noise. I have looked at almost
everything possible however, I have not found the source. I
would welcome any suggestions.–

Sounds like you have a loose or a thin item somewhere under the auto that is
vibrating at certain speeds or vibrations, harmonics !!
Check by hand under the auto {like the exhaust system ] for any thing
that has some movement or can be tighten ???
Good luck >>>>>Manny----- Original Message -----

Hi Manny,
You have described my problem perfectly. I was remiss in not
mentioned the things I’ve looked at. I have examined the the
boot, spare wheel well, engine compartment, exhaust system
and most all body and sheet panels.

I described this to a Jaguar restorer and he said ‘’ they all
do that and it is most noticeable in the XK-150’’ He however
did not say what was the source of the noise. His answer did
not seam plausible to me as it has never done this before
and I have never heard it in my E-Type.
I would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced
this problem.–

Mike,

with me it was the centre exhaust mount, and it took me
weeks to find it, as it only happened when the car was
driving, not idling. My other noise was the terry clip
mounting of the grease gun.

You really need an assistant standing alongside the car at
exactly the right rev speed to identify the direction of the
sound. Its impossible from inside the car.

Good luck!

Mark,
Unfortunately it will not make the noise when the car is
static. It must be in movement, under load.–

I have this too on my newly restored 150 DHC. The garage in the UK
who did the work have no clue either. I first thought it was a
rattling noise from the gearbox. It happens between 2600 and 3000
on all four gear when accelerating. I now believe it is the new,
wider exhaust system which touches the outermost part of the engine
block, at the bottom where it meets the sump. I will also look at
the middle mounting of the exhaust system. The original downpipes
were thinner and did not touch the engine block. It is only the
rear downward pipe that touches the block, and perhaps, at the
given RPMs it vibrates against the block??–

I had the identical problem on my 120. It went away when I replaced the
exhaust … it turned out to be one of the baffles in the old muffler was
loose. Not sure if Mike’s issue is the same, but it annoyed me for a full
year before I figured it out (actually, it was a friend standing beside the
car while I revved the engine through 3000 rpm that sussed it out).

Hello Mike:
If there is any kind of a noise that comews & goes, there is a
reason. My 150 OTS does not make that kind noise…
I’m presently fighting GM, for a noise that I’ve had in my 2004
Impala for the past year, a noise that I claim will be dangerous to me in
the future, I’ tired of having them crap on me !!
Have a good week-end

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions. I will give the
exhaust system a much more thorough examination as it does
seam to be the most logical source.–

After the engine rebuild of my 140 engine there was a similar
buzz. The mechanic quickly found the source. The pick-up line in
the oil sump was vibrating due to a torn screen. Quick fix and all
was well.–

It turned out to be a poor engine restoration. The 3,4 block was
bored to 3,8 but the cylinders were slightly too big, causing
piston clatter on acceleration. We have now had to source another
3,8 block and start all over. There are too many inexperienced
Jaguar ‘‘experts’’ that ought to stay away from serious engine work.–

Peder,
My 3.4L block was bored .020 over but I had a set of stock size 9:1 pistons
to install. The cheaper way was to have the cyls. re-sleeved to standard
bore. The machine shop did a great job for $480. parts & labor. Might be worth
looking into doing the same with your old block.
