[xk] XK Batteries

Does anyone, anywhere, in anyway have photos of original
Lucas 6v batteries that used to be in the XK150s or if you
have them in your car - could you please take photos of them
for me and email me at jagxkproject@yahoo.co.uk

Totally driving me wild. I want to find some for myself or
worst comes to worst have the replicated…exactly
replicated. But need to know what they look like!! Also any
documentation that indicates they were the batteries in the
car in early 1960s would be outstanding!

Well everyone, my DESPERATE search for these batteries even has
someone in the UK trying to assist me!! (I am in California) And
now it goes full circle and he is posting to the forum as well!
May this only serve to show how determined the quest is.

I have never seen original Lucas batteries in a 150. Only in a
120. I have photos of one of the original Lucas batteries from a
120 and I will post them for anyone to see. They are quite nice
and have Bakelite cases.

But does anyone have any recolection of what 150 batteries looked
like originally? I am pretty certain that they were dimensionally
the same as the batteries in a 120, but of course did not sport the
Bakelite lids that were included in the 120. Did they have the
ears on the top for the lids? Were the cases Bakelite or were they
hard rubber? Any information will assist us greatly!! 120 battery
photos coming shortly.

OK OK I give. Why the obsession to duplicate original batteries when (1)
You can’t see them (2) They are not judged in a JCNA Concours and (3) Are
probably poorer quality than ones you can buy at Auto Zone. Unless your car
is an unparalleled 100 point car why not spend the bucks on stuff people
looks at? I assume all your hose clamps are the Cheney type with round
heads and slots. Going rate on those puppies are around ten bucks per times
twenty. Good luck on you quest.

JB,

I stumbled around mine in the driveway for many years, until I found a way
to get some salvage value. Don’t recall of any pictures of the family with
the batteries in the background.

I only have vague, general impressions of what they looked like. Seems like
they were disproportionally taller than the equivalent US battery. Were
there lifting grips on the top edges? Not sure. Hard rubber probably.
Terminals on top, as was the custom in those days. Reasonably sure the
outline of the inter-cell busses was visible. Individual screw caps: I
think there was some characteristic of them that was unique. Was it the
grip on top, or was it something that extended inside? No covers, as you
say.

Hope this triggers other failing memories.

JB,
Try looking for issues of “The Motor” or “Autocar” from the time Jaguar
announced the XK150 to the public.
Typically suppliers would take out an ad, congratulating Jaguar on the new
model and tooting their horn about how proud they were to be an OEM
supplier for the new model.
Good chance there could be illustrations of the batteries.
Just a thought.

Thanks Bernard. I have that book. Unfortunately it shows only
original 120 batteries. There is a shot of a battery compartment
in a 140 but it has an aftermarket battery in it.

And Pat, yes I guess it is an obsession. But JCNA judges are not
my gods…the challenge to create the utmost originality, despite
barriers is my god on this restoration. Trust me, by getting
original batteries I am not thereby skimping in other areas. And
yes, I have the entire set of original Cheney clamps. Even where
you don’t see them like the fuel filler pipe.

Gene, your anecdote makes me smile! But you are digging deep! A
family photo with the batteries in the background would have been
perfect! I add here some photos I took of an original XK120?

Roar, good idea! Anyone have old issues of such magazines around
who could take a peek and see if there are any Lucas battery ads
from mid-1960?

Anyway, please look at the linked photos. Tell me how original
150 batteries compare to these original 120 batteries.
Specifically, these have Bakelite cases and I do not know if 150
batteries were Bakelite or hard rubber. Also don’t know if logo
embossed on side would be the same. Would they have the ears on
the sides like these? Etc, etc…

Thans guys! -JB
