[xk] XK120 DHC top material

Any idea of what is used to cover the metal plates that rest under the front bow of the top? I’ve contacted two or our most knowledgeable members and they disagree. My main concerns are water proofing and original appearance.
Thanks
Bill

My poor old college beater MGA had canvas top material here.
Where is Charles on this? Its not like him to be quiet on
DHC topics. Anybody heard from him lately? His last post was
August 6th.–

Strange, indeed. Charles has been silent on a couple non-Jag lists as well.
Maybe his body is acting up again.

Bill,

I think I answered this question by saying that it should have the same
type of material that was used on the door panels, Rexine?

My 120 DHC came with a thin white vinyl material on it that I later
replaced with a tan vinyl that came with my OSJI interior kit. I have a tan
interior with a tan top. It is waterproof and seals well against the rubber
seal on the top of the window frame. I have never had any leaks in this area
through some driving rainstorms.

I’ve seen one with wool headliner material, non-original, but wouldn’t
recommend it as it is just a wick that will soak up water and probably end up
wetting your headliner. It was discolored from water and was fairly new.

So looking closer in my stash of parts, I actually have a good original
top with the original material still attached. It appears to be a rather
stiff tan canvas, so stiff that it may have been soaked with varnish or some
kind of sealer at the time. Actually, I have two of these and they are both
original and the same.

But what I would recommend now, would be vinyl, matching the top color of
your car, like OSJI provided to me. All you see of it is the edge, when
the top is up and if you have a hood envelope, you don’t see it at all when
the top is down.

My two cents.

I got my top from BAS, which they claimed was as original as
they come. The area you are referring to on my top is
covered with vinyl, the same color as the headliner, gray.

Hi All:

May I add my concern/speculation to that of both Rob and
Gene regarding the ‘silence’ of Charles for some weeks. As
a very recent member of Jag-Lovers I was delighted to
receive an off-Forum email from Charles following my first
post congratulating me on providing him with another XK120
DHC that was alive and well. His trenchant erudition re.
the DHC has been missed.

Regards,

Chris.–

Charles has replied directly, and I don’t feel right about passing his response on without his permission. My thanks to everyone who has responded so far. It seems the issue is debated. I’ve got questions in to a couple of installers and will post their responses when I get themFrom: @BH1
