[xk] XK120 Grommet list - for your verification

Inspired by recent posts on xk120 grommets, I decided to
compile a fairly comprehensive list of grommets for the XK120.
This research is based on:

  • xk120 Anatomy books
  • Original Jaguar XK Porter book
  • Bill Bassets grommet list
  • Autosparks grommet list
  • Lucas Equipment Specifications and spare parts master
    catalogue
  • my xk120 OTS Dec '53

Please note:

  • Dimensions specified by grommet part numbers are grommet
    dimensions
  • OD dimension specified at grommet location is the sheet metal
    hole in my xk120
  • GR## or R## signifies Bassets PN

That’s really good stuff Tadek - well done.

A similar exercise I am doing for XK140 Grommets is at this stage only 1/2
done, so I will get a big kick along now with your efforts as many XK120
Grommets will be of course the same as XK140 - a few more, a few less.

Thanks,

Many thanks - I had same list - it’s a very good one. There is one
thing I do not understand:
GR17 Grommet: 1 for neg battery cable at rear of shut panel
GR9 Grommet: 1 for cowl harness negative battery cable in battery
box area.

Aren’t these 2 grommets for the same location?

Maybe my English is not too good, but I see only one grommet
needed for the battery cable in the battery box area.

Tadek;
I think I know the answer you are looking for…
The “GR17” grommet “at rear of shut panel” is actually located
outside the car, in the right rear wheel well, at the front of same, at
the bottom of the “B-Post”… The is where the “Negative” (Hot) wire
goes thru the sill box to the front of the XK… I know, I used tyre
chains one winter (Once!!) The chains expanded and cut the battery
cable in half!!
The “GR9” grommet “negative battery cable in battery box area”
is where the Negative Cable goes “down” thru the Battery
“Container” and out under the body… basically the cable is exiting
the vehicle. From this point it goes OVER to the sill box and into
the “GR17” Grommet… Com Pri??
Since you have an OTS, your “Battery Container” area might be a
bit different than the more refined (and better looking ;-}) DHC’s,
so it is possibly your XK might not need one of these grommets.
(BTW, Your English is better than mine!!!)

Tadek

charles is correct in his interpretation
so GR17 is what I think Tadek notes as a “D” Donut shape ie it has a hole in
the centre and GR9 is a “SB” semi blind? ie it has a web in the middle

Tadek and other interested listers,

Some additions to your excellent survey. I made a similar list
for the XK140 and found some Lucas numbers for these grommets.

Grommet Jaguar C977 has Lucas number 858065.

I’m not sure whether C974 is identical to Lucas 858062 as the
ID might be different: 5/16’’ (8 mm) for C974 and 1/4’'(6.4 mm)
for Lucas 858062.

Still haven’t found the corresponding Lucas number for C976.

Grommet C1426 is most likely Lucas 514732.

I found a different Lucas number for C2784 being Lucas 572683
instead of 199001, but both could be accurate (later
replacement).

Hope this helps to further complete your list.

I have a grommet sold to me as a C976 that has molded into it
‘‘858062’’. Interestingly, it also has ‘‘L.E.W. 7’’. I was wondering
if the ‘‘L’’ part of that was Lucas, and whether the ‘‘7’’ indicated a
sequential series of standard Lucas grommets. Of course, it may be
just a coincidence, or mean something else entirely.

Has anyone else seem these sports of ''L.E.W ‘’ markings ?

Charles Terry and others,

Many thanks for your comments!..

The negative cable has 3 grommets:

  1. in the front of the sill
  2. in the rear of the sill
  3. in the battery box area

There is no doubt regarding the:

  1. front of the sill. It’s the GR7 semi blind grommet. (3/4’’
    diameter hole)
  2. Battery box area. It’s the GR9 grommet.

However, the rear sill grommet is more interesting.
Bill Basset mailed me, that when he was making the list few
decades back, he found the rear sill grommet to be larger than
the front one. From his photo it looks like the hole on the
back of the sill was 1’’.

This contradicts with what I have found on my sill: the holes
on the front and rear were all the same, roughly 0.7’’.

Question is, does anyone have an original lager diameter hole
in the back of the sill (compared to the front) for the battery
negative cable???

Tadek;
Here is a bit of info to throw some petrol on the flames…
On my June 1953 build XK120 DHC, the holes measure as
follows:

  1. In the Front of the Sill–
There are TWO Holes, side-by-side, BOTH are 11/16" dia.
  2. In the Rear of Sill–
There is One Hole, 11/16" dia.
(I actually get 0.705" on the above three holes… vagrancies of age??)
  3. In the Battery Box Area–
There is One hole, 1-1/8" dia.
    Sooooooooooooooo…

In some respects, I am now more confused than ever.

In searching for the correct grommets for the optional fog
light wires, the item specified is C.976, and so I purchased
one that was advertised as NOS, and it came with the molded in
letters that seems to be 858062, and incidentally seems to me
to be far too large for the application and larger that the
photos I can find of factory prepared XK120s with fog lights,
but seems to match Tadek’s tabulation for a C.976
dimensionally.

Now comes Rob who points out that 858062 is actually the
correct Lucas No, for C.974. Interestingly, according to
Tadek’s breakout, C.974 would be 1/4’’ ID. 1/2’'OD which is much
closer to the appearance pf the ones on pictures.

Can anyone offer an explanation that fits this seemingly
contradictory data ?–
