[xk] XK140 2 Inch Intake Manifold

Hi Everybody,
In my stash, I’ve come across an intake manifold that has two 2 inch
openings and is marked C7462. The parts manual shows this as an intake
manifold for a XK140. However, the manual does not list two numbers, that
is, one for the smaller 1 3/4 inch carbs as opposed to the 2 inch carbs. The
manifold is used and appears to be original. How did Jaguar distinguish
between the two manifolds? I have no need for it so I was thinking of
selling it, possibly on ebay if no one on the list has a need for it. Anyone
have an idea what a fair price would be?

Jerry,

I have no idea what a fair price would be, but I’ve been considering 2" SUs
on my 120. I have a 140 engine, carbs and C-head now, but the 120 manifold.
That may be because the thermostat is on the radiator in the 120. I don’t
know if it would work, but if you could send some pictures I’ll try to make
sense of it with the hybrid setup on my engine. If it looks like it would
work, I’d be interested, depending on the price.

Hi Mark,
I’ll send some off, but will have to be later today as I have two doctors
appointments…gee, I’m falling apart!!! I also have another 2 inch that’s
in the general shape of a 120 manifold (no thermo) but when compared to the
140 manifold or a 150 manifold the ports are slightly different. No C
number, just a blurred “Part number ???” Maybe you would know what that
one came off. Volvo, Aston???
Didn’t he early 140 radiators have a top like the 120??? I don’t know, since
they aren’t 150s (;-).

The 140 manifold for the 1 3/4’’ carbs was C7462, the one for 2’’
carbs was C8479. Yours may have been ‘‘enlarged’’ in the past for
bigger carbs. I’ve never done that to an XK manifold, but I have
for MK2’s and 3.8S. An easy boost in power.

Jerry,
See it.# 8027171826 on e-bay. He’s had this one up for auction for 4 months
or more.

Jerry,

To paraphrase Porter ( revised): for the XK140 with C-Type head
fitted with H-8s, the regular intake mainfold casting was bored
out, the starting carb hold blanked over, and in some cases the
casting number ground off and a new part number stamped in.

While I am more into XK120s, I am not aware of any information that
contradicts this description.

Karl,
Thanks for the info. Looks like this one was as you described less the new
part number. Do you know the new part number? Another lister sent me that
info but I’ve been having email problems since I updated my McAfee software
a couple days ago. His email has just disappeared.

Jerry,

An earlier post in this string gave the XK140 2-inch variant
as ‘‘C8479’’. I have no independent verification or knowledge of that.

If I remember, next time I am rummaging , I will check the 2-inch
XK140 manifold in my collection of parts.

Jerry,

If the mystery manifold has internal coolant passages like the 120 and 140
manifolds, but slightly different bolt and port patterns and possibly a
rectangular four bolt carb mount, it may be the manifold from a North
American twin Stromberg 4.2L Series 2 E-Type, stripped of all of the Federal
emissions add-on hardware. Send me photo and I’ll see if I can ID it for
you.

whilst browsing some history i came across this reference to the XK140 MC intake manifold part no. The two photoes i enclose of my engine show the H8carbs and dual gaskets before restoration in one photo and the p/no C8497 stamped into that manifold where C7462 would have been cast.I have only recently noticed this stamping and wonder if many of the xk140 MCs have it as i have read where it was rare for the C7462 P/NO to be removed when it was upgraded to suit the 2"carbs.My car is S814191DN JOHN

I love that these old threads never really die or lose their interest!

John, my 140 MC OTS was manufactured in November 1956, S813007DN. I believe it came with the full H8 setup or was converted to factory specs shortly thereafter. The intake manifold has the cast C 7462 part number. The intake openings were machined to 2 inches. In addition the internal pass through between the two sides is 1 1/4 inches, which I believe is larger than stock. I do not recall whether there was a change in the intake design between when your car was built in April 1955 and mine in November 1956. In any event, the C 8497 number is not on mine.
