I have pictures posted on my website. My car is a 1959 but should be the
same. There may be others you may be interested in as well.

Please be aware that the safety catch on the XK150 is
completely useless!
Norman Dewis recounts how he has hit around the head by the
bonnet flying up the first time he drove the 150 prototype.
It is good to know I am in such exulted company. I’ve been
hit around the head by my 150 bonnet too. Through the roof
of the car.
XK150 bonnets need an additional safety safety device.
I loop a dog collar around the main catch and through the
grill. There is come debate as to whether it would be more
fitting to use a cat collar. Some others go for big leather
securing straps. Another 150 owner commented he liked the
strap as when he forgets to do it up and drives off he can
see the ends flapping around so he knows he forgot.–

I have found there is nothing wrong with the hood safety
lock, My 150 has been on the road now for 3 years without any problem with
the Bonnet safty lock…
If it is installed properly. along with the Bonnet, upper
& lower Bonnet lock, which has a lot to do with the safety lock…
The safety lock goes in the center of the pan that is in the
front of the raiator, there should be 2 holes in the pan for the lock.
Almost forgot that the hood release cable also has to be
installed properly…
Good luck

I would tend to agree with Manny that, when properly installed and
adjusted along with the main latch system and cable release, the
150 safety catch is very reliable.
It is, however, prone to misadjustment which could lead to definite
failure.
Assuming one is mechanically inclined and can reason with such
mechanisms (which I beieve most of us XK owners have to be!) you
can carefully study and ensure the main latch plate and post are
properly aligned and adjusted. Also, the safety catch tang at the
rear of the grille has to be inspected to make sure it is sound and
not bent out of shape. The safety catch itself that is mounted
forward of the lower part of the radiator needs to be properly
aligned, using shim washers if necessary, to make sure it fully
engages the grill tang when the bonnet is closed.
As stated above, I believe Jaguar’s error in this assembly was
manufacturing it with too many variable adjustments and parts prone
to bending or damage. One should not assume the average owner
would be always inspecting and tending to any problems.
I like the cat-collar idea though, or the bonnet strap. It is
pretty simple and failsafe.

I agree with the need for proper adjustment and would add
‘‘free to operate’’.
On mine, there was a fairly weak spring, which we replaced
to ‘‘encourage’’ the safety latch to engage (photo posted
February 2009).

I think the problem is with the safety catch not the main
catch. It is on the end of the grill which in turn is on the
end of the not very rigid bonnet. If for any reason you end
up relying on the secondary then…
Well this is what happened to me.

This happened on the Motorway (Freeway) I’m just lucky it
didn’t happen to me earlier when I was going down twisty
windy XK perfect country lanes.–

Hi Ken,
How fast were you going at the time? I was doing approx. 75mph when mine
went but it didn’t tear the hinge panel off as in your case. It did bend
over the windshield & put a dent in the roof as yours but popped back with a
good push in the center, can’t tell now where it bent in. The safety latch
was never engaged as noted by my daughter, which I ignored but I believe the
main latch didn’t engage properly because of a weak return spring on the
latch. I cleaned it up & replaced the spring so now it latches with strong
force. I also replaced the safety latch spring with a stronger spring. It’s
basically the same principle as on American cars.
Replaced the bonnet with a good used one.

Hello Swain:
Try rhis on for size…
Mark the 8 th riib of the grill. Counting from the left & from the
right, use masking tape. This is where the safety hook should be pointing
to…
Get a good soled cord & measure the radius from the flat [ 90 deg; ] of the
pan up front [ where the safety hook goes ] divide that in half [about
7=1/2 inches ] to find the center of the pan
Draw a line from the front to the rear of the pan. This will be the center
line of the safety hook
Now measure from the very back of the pan, down the center line, 2 inches,
this will be the start of the safety hook assy.
If you like ? send me yr address of list & I will send you a photo.
Hope this helps
Have a good day

I did this with succes. Make an assistent draw the grib and
yourselve push and draw up/down and side to side to the bonnet. If
it dont work you have a problem.
Mine is a 150 and I dont know the details on a 140, but the
ajustment should be obvius. I fitted an ekstra wire to draw under
the wing.
