[xk] XK150 Steering Rack Shims?

I am installing the steering rack back into my XK150 OTS and I am
looking for information on how it should be shimmed. The service
manual instructs that the original shims should be reinstalled the
same as when the rack was removed. The number and placement of
original shims is long gone.

Can anyone provide information on the correct measurements or setup
necessary for shims under the steering rack?

Thanks in advance!–

When I refitted the steering rack in my 140 I was in a similar situation to
you. I bought the car in a cardboard box format and no shims that fitted
that particular piece of the puzzle were in residence. I could find no
positive answers to the question of shimming but this is how I refitted my
rack. I believe that the shims are to mate the rack to the chassis mounts
without any preloading of the rack assembly. I bolted the mounts to the rack
assembly and bolted the rack loosely to the chassis to determine how well
the bottom of the mounts aligned with the chassis brackets at each mount
bolt hole using feeler gauges. I then shimmed as necessary.

Good and thanks.
Is it a question of getting the rack perfectly level/horizontal, even though the chassis cross member might be slightly tilted?
