I checked the archives and found my post of 2007 dealing with this issue.
In 1997, Terry McGrath kindly advised that the colour change occurred at the
following chassis numbers, depending, of course on body style and LHD/RHD.:

I own T832022DN, Feb. 1959 XK150S OTS LHD and it came untouched
with the C14312 air cleaner ass’y listed on Page 78 of the parts
book, it was silver, kind of ‘‘hammered’’ grey and I also acquired
another one of the same vintage with the same color. XK150S
Roadsters starting with 832076, LHD, had a different air cleaner
part number C15277 (drawing on P.79 of the parts book)might be of
different color, I don’t know. I also have a couple of the round
ones, that were installed on ‘‘non S’’ modedls and they are black.
