Rob, I was looking at the pictures you provided a while ago and have to ask as I’ve not seen any definitive answer for this “flower box” that folds down to reveal the batteries. Are the hinges for this attached directly to the metal battery base/shelf OR are they attached to/through a Birch ply vinyl covered finishing piece behind the seats? I ask because my “flower box” face stands a bit proud at its base so that it seems natural for it to be attached to a wooden piece.
My hinges on 679187 are attached directly to the metal shelf where the batteries and radio amplifier are, and to the plywood of the parcel box. The box is flush with the shelf. I don’t think it has ever been removed.

photo are absolutely correct and in fact looking at a 1954 XK120FHC today it is exactly the same
I could add that the hinges were nickel or chrome plated. Additionally I believe there should be a piece of vinyl on the lower vertical section which covered the bottom half of the hinge and the attachment screws were the chrome plate half raised half countersunk screws
