XK140 wheelbrace

Here are a couple of pictures of a ‘140 wheelbrace. For some unknown reason, there was black electrical tape wrapped in a spiral pattern around the two handles.
After peeling off the tape, it appears the tape had been applied long ago, and has actually protected some of the zinc colored plating on the handles. Where there was no tape, the plating has disappeared.

Just thought it was interesting how the tape has preserved the thin layer of plating.

Thanks Gary - how sure are you that plating is Zinc?

The factory Drawing for C.2955 advises Material: Black Bronze Bar with Dull Chrome Grips.

Interesting how the tape has protected the plating, whether Zinc or Dull Chrome.

I have seen these with plating totally gone, as per non-tape protected areas of yours.
Very thin/patchy all over.
With areas actually peeling off, leaving rusty surface under.
and those where plating looks shiny/as new.

Guess its all a matter of exposure.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for commenting, and for pointing out that the plating is actually Dull Chrome.
I shouldn’t have mentioned zinc, I was only trying to describe the colour of the plating, and instead, I have inadvertently implied an incorrect plating material.
