[xk8] '01 XKR Brake Recommendations

Would like as much assistance as possible regarding my '01 XKR
brakes. I am considering EBC rotors and red stuff pads fore and aft-
provided the caliphers will accomodate.Thought about stainless
steel brake lines but research renders mixed results - may look at
a master cylinder brace and an approved better brake fluid if I can
find one that’s good plus safe.

I’ve tried everything else to improve braking effectiveness and
eliminate the mushy brake pedal syndrome but to no avail.

Local Jag dealer is willing to work with me on this but is less
than enthusiastic with anything that’s not OEM. Yet when I press
them on how to improve the brakes and fix the aforementioned mushy
brake pedal they punt ‘‘it’s just characteristic of the car’’.

Not looking for product endorsements just some old fashioned help.

By the way, I love this car.

Many thanks,

Hi Richard,

I’m not a fan of Stainless Steel brake lines on a street car.
A ‘‘mushy pedal’’ is a relative thing. Not sure one person would
agree with what another would call mushy. That said, and given
yours is an 01, already 8 years old, one remedy for a soft pedal is
new OEM lines. Old lines can begin to balloon with age.

I am not a fan of Red Stuff either. Too aggressive for street use
and I’ve heard of some experiencing cold brakes that can be
ineffectual. These work far better on a track car. Again, never
tried these, but not what I would put on a street car, so take it
for what it’s worth to you.

I change brake fluid pretty regularly in my cars, about every 12/18
months which is a little more frequently than manufacturer’s
recommendations. This too can have an affect on a soft pedal,
especially if the brakes are bled properly. Siphon bleeding does
not work well on Jaguar calipers. I don’t look for anything magic
in brake fluid. I’ve had the best results using a DOT 4 synthetic.
Valvoline is my preference.

Finally, another contributor to soft pedal is a failing master
cylinder.

Any of these suggestions are given blind. Without seeing your car I
could be off or on with a little luck.

Best,–

Hi Richard,

On my Silverstone there are steel lines, they are OEM and I
presume also prt of the R-performance options. So you
should be able to get them OEM.

The big (Brembo) rotors and pads make quite a difference
when I compare them with the ones I had on my former 8.
They can be retrofitted, but only with 20’’ wheels. As there
is no miracle, they do also wear MUCH faster…

Brgds,
