There are two serious problems with the pre-2000 XK8s. One is the
chain tesioners used the wrong plastic and they tend to break up.
When the do, the engine can get lunched. The other problem is the
nicasil lining on the cylinders. The early XK8s had a problem with
the fuel system on short runs. Apparenly it would flood the
cylinders if you do something like start the car, back it out of
the garage, and stop the engine. First, the car is almost
impossible to re-start and second the gasoline sitting in the
cylinders attacks the nicasil lining == the more sulpher in the
gas, the more the attacking.

Personally I would recommend that you get a 2000 or later car.

I have a 97 XK8. I looked at many, and most had a new engineb
fitted by Jag, due to the Nikosil thing. They are replaced with
a ‘steel’ lined’ engine, thereby eliminating that problem. With
regard to the engine flooding after a staccato like start/off. All
you need to do is floor the accelorator when starting. ITS THAT
SIMPLE. You needn’t go to the expence of a newer car than is
practicle. Just go for one (and there are many) that have been re
engined.
Good luck

PS. I will be putting mine on the market soon if you are interested.
It has done 66,000. The new engin was fitted 12 month and 15,000
ago. It is like new to look at, and to drive. I have a private xk8
plate on it that I am prepared to listen to offers for.
I can always be got on 07974663081 for a chat.
