[xk8] 2000 XK8 ZF Transmission

We got my wife’s XK* back today from my local Jag dealer; it
had the dreaded '‘transmission Fault’ message and left her
stranded on Hwy 99(close to home fortunately).
Because of Holidays and back East weather it took 2 weeks to
replace with ‘Remanufactured part supplied by Jaguar’.

This tranny came from New Jersey; anyone know who rebuilds
these units for USA? Jag Dealer doesn’t know…except
new ZF parts!
Wife is disappointed; only 61k miles and lots of $'s incldg
$460 for 5 qts/ltrs of fluid…
Fellow Jag Club member lost their XJ8 trans a month ago,
also 60K miles…What has happened to German
Engineering!–

I Suppose you do have a ZF5HP24 (pre-2004 cars). That tranny has
only one weak point, in the torque converter. But most of the time,
they are replaced not because of this weak point, but because of a
faulty external electric connector… Of course, replacing the
whole tranny replaces also that 5 connector, but well…

Don’t know who rebuilt the transmission but they would have
had to fill it with ATF in order to test it. The units
dealers normally use come filled.

Perhaps the transmission but not the torque converter(?).
At $480 I would have to know.

There have been a number of posts lately on ‘A’ drum
failures and a corresponding shortage of parts. Any
thoughts on this?–

Tom,
Dealer say’s Transmissions are drained before shipping,
as is the core return…I Emailed Jaguar as to
who does their rebuilds, and why early failures; so far no
response…
Next move is to contact ZF Friedrichshafen AG…they
don’t show an Email address for NA only Germany.–

I got mine (5HP24) from the ZF factory in the UK near
Nottingham & collected it myself. From ZF itself you get a
rebuilt unit and torque convertor, filled with fluid &
tested on their rig for 1500 inc vat. I went for this
option because at least I knew it had been tested before I
fitted it, so any problems would be down to me and I didn’t
fancy the possibility of having to take it out again. I plan
to keep the car long term. If they send them to the states
maybe they do drain them but it was all plugged up to stop
leaks & worked off the pallet without need for additional fluid.

While it was out it gave me the opportunity to sort out some
pretty serious rusting of the transmission tunnel which is
virtually invisible unless you pull up the carpets or try &
look behind the tunnel heat shield from below. It’s all
thanks to the double skin of the chassis rail with the floor
panel lying over it & little protection from paint.

Beware if you have an older car. It was a lot of work to
repair the rail and overlying floor panel, having to make
the sections required.

Eventually I’ll scale down the resolution of my photos &
upload them. It’s not a pretty sight & all hidden from the
unwary.–

I got a first response to my Email from Jag cust. service, a
phone call at 7:30am! They don’t know where the rebuild
comes from! but will try to find out, soon. They said they
have to contact my Dealer and get Part No (maybe she meant
serial no); doesn’t make any sense to this retired Boeing
Engineer.
Previous time I contacted Jag Cust. Service I wanted to know
what US spec engine oil to use…they stated they are NOT
Technical and to call my Dealer!
Having been a Jaguar Driver for over 50 years I think I am
expecting too much from Jaguar USA…my Tacoma Dealer
tells me that when they have Technical questions they call
England!!

Will keep you all posted if I ever find out; there is
suppose to be a Tech Rep for USA; don’t know who or where.

Thank Goodness for the Jaglovers site–
