[xk8] 2003 XK8 purchase

Hi there!

I currently own a 2000 XK8 coupe. I bought it with 114K
miles on it four and a half years ago. I have managed to
successfully add 52K since then. I am proud of that!

It is time to move on, and I am looking at a 2003 XK8 coupe
with 80K miles. This has the new 4.2 ltr. engine and I
wonder if I should be concerned about the first year of this
iteration. It often takes a manufacture several years to get
a new offering ‘‘right’’.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Michael,

I recall your 200 model year purchase, in fact I think that
I advised you against the purchase. I am amazed you got 52K
more out of the old girl.

Anyway, in response to your question. The 2003 model year is
Jaguar’s version of getting it ‘‘right’’. That version of the
4.2L engine has proven to be pretty much bulletproof. It is
essentially the same engine as found in the later XK 4.2L
naturally aspirated cars like my 2009 Coupe’. I had a 2003
S-Type with the 4.2L and can say that the engine was
flawless. It provided great mileage in that car and if you
stuck your foot in the grill it had more ‘‘snort’’ than a sane
person should be experiencing. You will not get the same
mileage in the XK8 because of gearing but you definitely
will get the ‘‘snort’’.

Also the 2003 has a far better transmission than prior
years. If you coaxed 52K more out of the 2000 you should
easily more than double that in the 2003.–

I second everything Gordon has said, from my own experience. the 4.2 litre
engine is a gem in every way.
