[xk8] 2004 XK8 passenger door handle woes

Greetings, I have encountered a problem with my 2004 XK8
passenger door handle. The outside handle no longer works.
It can’t open the door when the door is unlocked; it
responds to a pull of the handle as though the door were
locked. The passenger door, however, can be operated without
problem from the inside. The passenger door light and window
function seem to work normally. I did read prior posts about
door gremlins but did not quite find a match to this
problem, My apologies if I overlooked something. Any
thoughts? Many thanks in advance.–

One possibility could be the door the wiring harness. They tend to wear out
at the hinges as the car gets old and the wire insulation becomes brittle.
It happened on 2 of my cars and was causing all sorts of gremlins to the
alarm and locking system. The mecanical part is interesting also (handle).
Plastic retainers snapping causing links to fall off.-----Original Message-----

Well I agree that gremlins are part of owning one of these
cars but I do not think that is your problem today. The
door is mechanical and electrical. The mechanical is a
linkage from one device/module to another and the electrical
is a matter of micro switches and a door control module. My
take on your problem is mechanical and I say this because
the linkage from the handle to the latch is not releasing
the latch. Pull the door panel and use caution when looking
and reaching inside that door and see if you can find it.
You may want to disconnect the battery prior to getting your
fingers inside the door. This is a link from my page on the
door latch mechanism

If you need additional info on the linkage let me know.–

Hey GusG (and the rest of you), thank you for being out there and lending your ears and help. I have a similar problem in that my passenger door will not open. The electric locking mechanisms still sound off in that door as the driver door cycles properly. I can hear it trying to lock/unlock4 times and then quit. neither door handle on the passenger door will work so if I can’t open the door at all how do I get the door panel off to work on it?

I never had to remove the door panel with the door closed so it will depend on the space around the door jam. This is a video of a how to remove the door panel with the door open.

Sounds like one of two things went wrong a bad or misaligned switch or a broken linkage.

I am having a similar problem with the outside passenger door handle on my X Type. I believe it is mechanical, in that wear and tear has stretched the mechanical link between the door handle and the latch. I have found that if I pull out sharply on the handle, it will not release, but if I gently pull up on the handle, it will pop open.
