[xk8] 97 flooded?

'97 XK8 was run for a few seconds on Monday and shut down
cold. Yesterday (Wednesday) it would not start, and
cranking sounded like no compression. A little research
indicated it was probably flooded.
Today I removed the plugs and injected a little oil (maybe
1/4 ounce) into each cylinder. Installed new plugs, cleaned
out the throttle body, and tried again. Symptoms are the
same, although it seemed to almost fire one time.
I’m assuming that I didn’t use enough oil, so I’m planning
to repeat the procedure tomorrow, but this time checking
compression to make sure and adding 1 ounce of oil per
cylinder. And since there may be some gas mixed with the
oil, I’m planning to change the oil right after it gets
warmed up. Does this sound right, or have I missed something?–

Andrew,

The proper fix is to hold the throttle wide open (foot on the gas
pedal) while cranking about 30 seconds at a time. It should start
on the first or second (or third) cycle.

Holding the pedal to the floor shuts off fuel to the injectors on
startup so you are not continuing to wash off the cylinder walls.
It also allows oil to be brought up to the oil ring and relubricate
the cylinder walls.

When you put the 1/4 ounce of oil in each cylinder, you had the
right idea, except on a V8, the oil ends up only coating a small
portion of the cylinder circumference and possibly fouling the
plug; then, without holding the throttle wide open, the fuel
injectors rewashed the cylinders.

Hope this helps you.–

Thanks Steve,
I did go through that procedure yesterday without success,
that’s why I wondered if I had missed something. However I
tried again just now and it fired up on the second attempt.
Idling quietly, everything seems to be fine.

Steve, when you say ‘throttle wide open’, is that just as far as
the kick down switch, or ensuring the kick down switch is operated
as well? And is this procedure applicable to the 4.2 engine?

Thanks in anticipation

Yes, gas pedal to the floor and held there while crank starting. I
believe the 4.2 ECM is programmed the same way.–
