[xk8] Air Bag Warning Light

XK* 2001. Ex UK car. Looking for a solution to the air bag warning
light coming on after about 30 sec of starting the engine. This
happens regardless of a passenger being in the car or not.It some
times flashes and then remains on all the time. Is there a simple
fix for this warning light?–

Hello jagboy… where abouts are you in Aus?

I have a 97 XK8 that I imported from California and
converted myself. Before conversion the light was
fine…after, the light comes on just after starting…BUT
only when the car is cold… if I turn the ignition off and
retsrat…no light… if I have driven the car…parked it
and come back in a couple of hours…no light…

In my case, this is a timing issue…something I did to the
loom changed the timing for the airbag controls on the CAN
network.

I just live with it… have a look and see if this is the
same issue? If it is, at least the car can be driven with
the airbag system engaged… if not, then I doubt there is a
quick fix…but its worth having the full Jag diagnostics
run to check for codes.

If you need a way through the rego process, I can give you a
few hints…but not on this forum…

cheers–

On a 2001, there are two systems that trigger that light: one is a
weight-contactor in the seat, and one is an ultrasonic obstacle
detector hidden behind the small grid, next to the right of the
passenger’s neck. Check these two. An object sitting on the
dashboard can be sufficient to activate the ultrasonic one.

I couldn’t repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder.

Hello,

I have a '97 which had a light problem also. It took me a year to figure it
out and I tried many things. Some said it was the module others the seat
connectors and many were concerned by the steering column. I checked the
connectors and came very close to change the module. Now the light is gone.
I’m quite sure it’s in the steering. The adjustment up and down is ok but in
and out does not work, so I never change the position. I came to play with
the memory one day. Seats moved steering too but in just one axis. The day
after light was gone. I will dismantle the steering and fix it next spring.
Car is now stored. I had similar problem with my '96 XJR ( 97 is a carry
over from the 96 XJ6). I think you are close to the problem but I wonder if
it could be the timing as you say or more likely a bad connection, damages
wired etc… Now since you changed the wheel position, will be a walk in
the park for you.

good luck

cordialement,
skater

There are several possible faults in the wiring arrangements for
the driver and passenger airbags and the various impact sensors
that are specifically indicated by the airbag light coming on 30
seconds after ignition. The exact fault can only be determined
positively by having the fault codes read. As these are B type
codes, you need a scanner that can read Jaguar specific codes, such
as AutoEnginuity or it’s off to the Indy or Dealer. The car is safe
to drive, but in the event of an impact the airbag operation is
officially ‘uncertain’.–

Hello ,

AutoEnginuity do not support the early models like mine (97). They told me
that jaguar did NOT stick to the standard pinouts for the connector. They
did not offer any help :(. Pre 2000 is a more simple layout. The system is
more like the one on the '96 XJR I owned.
