[xk8] Annoying noise from dashboard

On my 2000 XK-8 Convertible, when I make a ‘‘fist’’ and
pound ‘‘lightly’’ on the top of the Dashboard Driverside I get
a ‘‘rattling/vibrating’’ type noise… This is more noticeable
when the top is up and on a rough road where the noise is more
noticeable.
Do I have to pull the gage cluster to get at the source of this
problem or does the top of the dash remove easily ???–

Gus;

Sounds like that may be my noise problem.
I will check it out and try what you recommend as a fix.
Thanks for the speedy response !!!

Thanks for the photos/tips! I developed that problem late
last year and it’s on my ‘‘to-do’’ list. I was going to go
after it a different way but you’ve showed me how to do it
properly. Now I just need to figure out why my car won’t go
into reverse from drive.

I am not a transmission guy but I will tell you what I know.
The transmission has an adjustable cable and adjustment at
times is necessary. The other is that it also has a shifter
selector switch that could be worn or out of adjustment or a
transmission issue. I would look at the selector switch.–

Hi Gus,

Thanks for sharing Dan Jensen’s excellent tips on Defrost vent/dash rattle on the XK8. I took the right side off yesterday and sure enough the bonding glue that held the retainer clips for the defroster grill at the base of the winshield was cracked allowing the clips to rattle in the contact area of the plastic defroster vent. Follow Dans instructions. I would add the following tips:

  1. After you apply the epoxy glue to the cracked glue area, fit some rubber door stop wedges between the windshield and the top of the glued area. This supplies excellent compression of the glued area. Let dry overnight. It will be rock solid in the am.

  2. Prior to re-installing the defroster vent, coat the metal and plastic clips with Krytox, a Jaguar approved gel that will not break down in high heat areas yet provides a long lasting bonded film of anti-squeak gel. You can buy it on Amazon. Small tube is $24.00 and I have used it on many areas of the Jag. There is a TSB on Krytox on Jag Repair info .com

Good luck
