[xk8] Center instrument panel removal and headrest tweaks

Hi to all and many thanks for being out there.

I’d like to repair both electric headrests - one makes noise
but no movement when switched, the other does nothing.
I’d also like to remove the lens covering the center gauges
in order to get that pesky dust out. I’ll replace the bulb
while I’m there.
JTIS scares me a bit with it’s descriptions and drawings.
I’ve seen a few owner photos of the other cluster and
console removal which was a piece of cake to follow so I was
hoping to find one for these two jobs.
Also - how do I get TSB’s such as that 501-58?
It would be great to hear from you, Mark–

Hi,
cant comment on the headrests as mind (97) does not have them…

However, getting the centre gauges out is fairly staright forward…

The centre woodwork is clipped in and will come out with gentle
prying from the bottom… The JTIS says to use a plastic lever to
avoid scratching…
Lever out the bottom until it is out by about 1/2 inch…then use
your hands and gently pull the entire piece away from the dash…
dont lever it up…it just pull staright back and pushes back in
afterwards.

The gauges are then very easy to get at and remove… You can see
the screws etc in the front, and only one electrical connection at
the rear for the entire set… I dont recall how to get the face
off the cluster…but it should be obvious one the cluster is on the
bench…

hope this helps… keep in mind my car has no GPS here so I dont
know if that complicates the process or not…but I’d doubt it…

cheers–

I have sent you TSB 501-58 via eMail.
Noise is good as it ensures motor activity. No response from the
switch is NOT good. More diagnosis is required.

The TSB is only partially useful so I will email you a
document I put together that includes better instructions
along with some photos. To me, the trickiest and least
obvious step was figuring out how the seatback finisher
disconnects (the fabric that goes from the back of the
seatback to the front). The pieces of fabric are held
together with a tongue-and-groove plastic gizmo.
