[xk8] Convertible Rear Quarter Window Replacement

While raising the top on my 01 XK8 convertible recently, I
heard a loud pop from the right rear seat area and saw
that the rear quarter window was no longer operating. I
could hear the drive motor cycle down and stop, and then
cycle up and stop as I toggled the Roof switch. I also
heard the sound of a cable flopping around.

I reviewed the XK8/XKR Jag-lovers archives, but found no
discussion of this type of repair. I then reviewed the
removal procedure described on the Jaguar JTIS CD. Under
Rear Quarter Window Regulator Motor Vehicles with
Convertible Top (86.25.11), the second step is Remove
convertible top. Refer to 76.86.15. YIKES! This seemed to
confirm my initial concerns that replacement would be hard,
time consuming and probably expensive. As it turned out, it
is not necessary to remove the top, thus saving many hours
of labor. As I went about the replacement, I took photos and
made notes that supplemented the JTIS descriptions. These
may be helpful to anyone who has to perform this repair, or
wants to realign the rear quarter windows, since there are
several steps called for in the JTIS instructions that are
not necessary or are not fully described. While this is
probably not a common failure, the San Diego Jag dealer had
the regulator on the shelf ($317) so it must have happened a
few times before to XK8s in the area. Based on the nature of
the part that failed, i.e., a plastic retainer for the ends
of the cable, I suspect there might be more of this type of
failure as the cars age.

Rear Window Regulator Replacement.pdf (1007.3 KB)

I used this to replace the right quarter window, and it worked great; no, the top doesn’t need to come off, only loosened. The regulator was rebuilt by power window repair in Phoenix (I live nearby and visited personally) with metal parts, and it has worked perfectly for over a year. Can also check the stereo speakers as at least one has to come out and the other rear is readily accessible. 1997 XK8, also did chains, tensioners and water pump. 64000 mi.

This article was so clear and helpful. Thank you.

I didn’t need to replace the regulator, the glass had separated from the metal bracket which bolts to the regulator sliding plate - completely rusted through.

So you can get away without pulling the whole regulator out and get to 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the glass to regulator by separately moving the regulator up and down.

Need down to get it in and out and up to replace the glass. There is a you tube video of jumping the up and down relays o just move the window with the roof down.

The other little confusing thing was the boss to hold the top of the black section of the hydraulic actuator. This is on the rear of the roof mounting bracket and the cover plate has another boss that clamps it in position.
