[xk8] ECU gone bad! LOOK FOR IT ALL OVER THE US, CAN'T FIND REBUILT

Hello,

My computer (ECU) went bad. I looked everywhere in the US for a
rebuilt one for a XK8 1997. Some shops have told me things
like ‘‘that part does not exist in this planet’’ or ‘‘there are none
available in the US, not even new’’. I want to buy a rebuilt one, I
refuse to spend $5000 or more in a new one for this car (if it
really is available), it just does not make sense spending that
much money. I talked to my local mechanic again today and he says
that he can get me a rebuilt one for $2500, still a great deal of
money. Then I came accross AutoTech Microsystems
(http://www.ecudirect.com/aboutus/), which guarantees rebuilding my
current unit in my car for $750.00 with a lifetime guarantee - only
thing is that I might have to ‘‘reprogram’’ the ECU with the local
dealer?!? Any suggestions? Does anyone has heard about this company
or rebuilding an ECU and installing it in a XK8 1997 successfully?
Should I take the $2500 deal as horrible as it sounds? Please
someone provide some insight to this issue.

Thank you,–

Yes, these are not available, but from an official dealer,
and even he must order them specially at the factory as
they need to be tuned to your precise car’s characteristics
on basis of the VIN…

If you buy a used one from an other car, it will not work
on yours even if it is a very same car: there are plenty of
handshakes, including the VIN… It could be reflashed by a
dealer, BUT only if he before had made a dump of the eeprom
content of your original ECU… Which will not be possible
here I’m afraid as your original one seems to be damaged…
Maybe these ecudirect people can do it if the problem is a
ECU H/W one and the ECU S/W is intact and accessible… but
if it does not work you’ll need to buy a new eeprom anyway.

I’d go for the 2.500 USD option, except if you can
negociate a full-money garantee back from ECUdirect if they
cannot restore thmselves the original software (which
they’ll know very quickly and should be able to tell
you…). Do not accept the ‘‘maybe you’ll need to reflash
the eeprom’’ clause, this is BS and telling you this does
not speak in their favor…

Charles,
Are you saying it would be a prudent preventative to have a
Jaguar dealer download the ECU data in anticipation of a future
failure?

Cheers

These ECU fail very rarely, but why not.
The dealer must accept to do it, which is not sure as it is
protected data, and it must be possible to copy it on
another media like an USB-Key or a disk, which is not sure
either (at least as a dealer accessible option on the WDS
system; by hacking it should not be a problem).
