[xk8] emergency brake is stuck

In reply to a message from timf sent Sat 21 Nov 2009:

Here in Canada I was taught that one should always apply the EB
when parking irregardless of transmission type as it will extend
the life of your transmission. With your foot still on the brake
you then put the tranny in Park, apply the emergency brake and let
your foot off the brake peddle. We were also told that in the event
your brakes fail then you would use the EB to safly stop the car.
There have been instances of people doing such a thing…thus
the ‘‘emergency brake’’ is named.–

here: ‘‘emergency brake’’. Never come across that to describe a
handbrake, or its purpose before. I wonder if it is a legislative
difference between US and UK, or a perception of usage?

Also I am paranoid about disc warping so couldn’t contemplate
siting at a red light with my foot on the brake!–

Nah,

I usually apply the handbrake put in neutral, let my foot off of
the foot brake to make sure there is no roll, then put in Park.–

I just wanted to add a thank-you to Carl. My son backed my wife’s XK8 (1999) out of the garage this morning and put the handbrake on since he was going to leave in running for a few minutes. When my wife came out to drive away the brake was on and everyone quickly concluded the HB was broken. I had totally forgotten about the unique way the XK8 HB operated. After I read your post, I executed the traditional slap to the forehead and held my head down in embarrassment. It seems to me there is an additional reason to use the forum, memory assistance.

That is the method I learned in the defensive driving courses I took while in the oil patch. I use it when parking on a grade. Otherwise, I just use the Park position on the transmission.
