[xk8] Engine Fault / Poor Engine Performance Alarm

Back in June 2008, I started getting the engine fault alarm. Local
Jag dealer first replaced most of the fuel delivery system. Did
not solve the problem. Next they said it was the transmission. I
installed a rebuilt transmission. Went three days before the alarm
came back. Decided to get my own code reader. The error code I
first got was P1227 which according to my code list is ‘‘Mechanical
Guard Circuit Low Input’’. No one knew what this meant or what to
do about it, so I kept driving the car trying to get more data.
After several repeat engine fault alarms with no error codes, I
finally got some new codes and in addition to the Engine Fault, I
started getting poor engine performance alarms. The error code
that show when the alarms are active are P0354 ‘‘Ignition Coil D
Primary Secondary’’ and P1367 ‘‘Ignition System Failure Group 1’’.
Local Jag dealer gives me three potential components. First is the
individual coils but there are alarms for each of the coils, so I
am ruling that out. Second is the ignition module ($350) which
would great if it fixes the problem. Third possiblility is the
Engine Control Module ($5,000+). ECM would probably push me over
the edge in keeping the car.

Has anyone had any history replacing the ignition module? Is there
such a thing as a rebuilt ECM? Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

Just out of curiosity how is the overall performance with the fault.
This information my lead to where the problem lies.
With that high mileage I would tend to worry about emission parts
and controls. That is a guess.

What MY and engine.

BTW I’m local to the area, Marrero.–

The Mechanical Guard is part of the Throttle Body assy and there
are many TSBs for the throttle bodies. There are also some recalls
for them. A make, model, year would be helpful.

The Jag is a 1997 coupe. Original engine with normal maintenance
replacements. No emission component replacements other then the
recommended changes.

When Engine Fault alarm is in, the engine runs in the limp mode and
runs ruff. It will stay running but no accelaration. The fault
clears when you turn the car off and restart. There does seem to
be a temperature factor on this. Problem originally started in the
heat of summer on the 90+ days. Now it happens after the car has
been driven, then sits for less than an hour and is then started.
Fault shows up shortly after starting car.

Is the engine control module located in the engine bay or in the
trunk. Local Jag dealer indicates they need numbers from the trunk
to give me a price.

Thanks for the feedback so far.–

The ECM is located in the plastic box, right side, next to the
firewall. I am sure the numbers the dealer is referring to is on a
label attached to the trunk pan next to the spare tire. It lists
the codes for all the various modules in the car.

I would shop around for a used one before selling a car you have
loved for that many miles. You will have to match the module codes
exactly. There are a couple sites that will broadcast you parts
request to many wreaking yards. It is not necessary to pay someone
to do that. Several are free. I bought a $2050 Transmission
Control Module that way for $90.–
