Keitho,

Had this problem on my XJ8. It’s probably the gear shift interlock
solenoid.

On the top left of the J gate, you will see a star shaped screw.
Remove this screw and insert a small screwdriver or similar item
into the hole. You only need to push down a couple of inches and
you will feel a slight springy resistance. While pushing the tool,
gently, against this resistance, use your other hand to release the
gear selector. You should then be able to remove the key.

When this first happened on my car, I couldn’t remove the key at
all. Fortunately, someone told me about the above method and after
releasing the gear stick , the key could be removed. I’m ashamed
to say that, after about 6 months, I still haven’t fitted a new
switch. I just remeber not to use ‘‘P’’.

Good luck.–

Hi guys,
thanks a million for all the help.I managed to use the manual
overide switch to get the shifter to Neutral & the car starts
perfectly.I still can’t remove the key from ignition or open the
trunk which probably suggests the problem is with the Gear Shift
Interlock Solenoid as the vehicle thinks it hasn’t reached park yet.
Also,P is illuminated when the car is in park…
Any idea where this solenoid is located in the car?

Thanks
Keith

Keith,

You have to remove the J gate, it’s underneath it.–

Hi Keith,
Wow. I had the dealer fix my stuck key. They had put in some metal
plate in the shift box and checked various switches and lubricated
parts. What I hated was that I couldn’t get the key out to lock the
car! I realized I could use my spare key to lock the car from
the outside. The remote would not work with the key in the
ignition. Leaving an XK8 on the streets of San Francisco with
a key in the ignition was nutty!
Funny times.

I took a look beneath the J-Gate cover and discovered that
the Park microswitch was damaged, and I suspect that the
Neutral switch is also missing a metal arm, though it seems
to work all right.

I apparently need to get a new microswitch or two. Are the
switches themselves replaceable, or does the whole upper
assembly have to be replaced? I couldn’t tell how the
problematic switches were attached, but the pictures I took
made it look as though the Park and Neutral switches are
bonded onto metal ears of the larger assembly. The
microswitches are visible in this photo:

In reply to a message from Mark DeLong sent Sat 5 Jul 2008:

I found two options: individual microswitches or (for the
right-side of the J-gate) an assembly that includes two
microswitches.

For posterity, since someone is bound to have this problem in
the future, the part numbers are:

individual microswitch: LJA6190AC
assembly with 2 switches: MJA4940AG

Looks like an easy fix.–
