[xk8] HELP! Automatic Window Feature Upon Touching Door Handle

I just bought a 2001 XK8 and love it.

Unfortunately, there is a minor problem.

The passenger window lowers a fraction of an inch upon lifting the
handle to open the door. It is supposed to raise after the door is
closed. It doesn’t.

As a matter of fact, if one opens the door AGAIN, it lowers the
window another fraction. And doesn’t raise it.

It is almost as if it senses the window is all the way to the top
already. But I don’t know.

Any ideas?

MANY thanks.–

Mike:

Very common issue. Reset your window stops, as described in
the archives: lower window and hold switch until a click is
heard (2-3 seconds on my car). Raise window and hold switch
until a click is heard. If this doesn’t solve the problem,
you likely have a weak battery that is on its last legs.–

Sounds like you need to do the window reset procedure.

With the doors closed and the key on, raise both windows (at once, or
one at a time, doesn’t matter) until you hear a click or two.

Next, lower both windows until you hear a click or two. This resets the
upper and lower limits of the windows.

Now, if the problem comes back, it often is due to a weak or bad
battery.

And, welcome to the forum!-----Original Message-----

Hello, I had the same window problem with my 2001 when I bought it
earlier this year. Then the battery failed about a month after I
got the car. I purchased a gadget for about $15 that plugs into
the cigarette lighter to keep the electronic ‘‘memory’’ intact when
the battery was removed for replacement. Follow the window
position reset procedure described by the prior responses and your
window problem along with your impending battery failure will be
corrected. Best Wishes, Frank–

I have exactly the same problem with both doors (2003 XKR). I’ve
had the dealer sort the problem 3 times and am getting a little fed
up. Anyone any ideas…that I can pass on to the dealer.–

Hi there,
not a major problem although a disliked issue.
XK®s have a minor design defect with their memory chip eproms
that shall hold the windows (up/down) position, as well as the
stored (if you’ve the memory function) steering column position and
driver’s seat position. Below 10V on teh battery, the memories get
erased, they forgot to spend them a buffer battery. During engine
ignition, it is much likely that older batteries went below this
10V barries and so the memories are erased.
Had this on my 2000 XKR until having replaced the battery and have
it actually on my new one, which stood amonth in cold/rainy
Switzerland weather, so battery is at low capacity as well. Re-
charging it completely, not through the generator, but with a
loader, made the problem disappearing.
Once you’ve ‘‘empowered’’ memories again, you of coruse need to re-
program th ewindow positions:
Press down button until window is fully down and hold it for about
3 sec. (hear a click), than do the same in the upper positon (when
doo is closed) and after having heard the ‘‘click’’ the window is
reprogrammed.
happy X-mas from Switzerland

Just joined the group, picked up my 2001 XK8, and found this same problem (at first I was surprised that the darn window went down at all, not knowing about this feature!). Thanks for the recommended fix. It worked!

Yes, yes, yes! This tip just helped me big time. Was fearing another trip to the dealership until I read the fella’s problem just like mine. Just did the windows down ‘click’… then windows up ‘click’! Vwhala! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Just to throw my two cents in, just pay attention, my passenger side will stop working all of a sudden like sometimes and I have to reteach it every other month or so. Yes I have a new battery and yes, my alternator is throwing good charge. Also yes I drive it often so it’s not like it sit for more than a day or two between drives. I have had numerous times where someone gets in the passenger door and I say “Wait! Don’t shut it yet!” It gets kinda old, but I don’t always have passengers

There is another window error that occurs and am still identifying the cause. It is not solved by reprogramming the windows.
Window drops on opening the door but immediately handle is released with door open window raises again. It will only lower and stay down with door handle held in open position. This means you can only close the door with the window in the up position.
Suggestion is that it is the latch not supporting the weight of the window, or the latch spring cannot hold it in the open position? Has anyone else had this problem and identified the cause? Thanks

I guess it could be the door closed micro switch is bad. Do both doors do it?

I’ve been thinking about this problem and Jason asks a very good question. Each of the door handles has a switch that closes when the handle is lifted. However they are inputs to different modules, the driver’s door and passenger’s door having their own modules and as Jason suggests, it might be that the door lock has not told the module that the door is open and so closes the window as soon as you let go of the handle.

Does the INSTPK display DOOR OPEN when the door is OPEN?
If not then you have your answer.

Thank you all for quick reply. The problem is only with the passenger door, and INSTPK operates correctly for Drivers door, but does not display Passengers door is open when it is.

Looks like you’ll have to repair or replace the door latch to fix this. JTIS has good instructions for doing this but it does look like a pain.
