[xk8] My 2001 XK will probably need some sorting out too

A few lights on, so will try diagnostics first. Glad to
learn the ECU can be fixed or replaced. Too bad these cars
have been loaded down with this junk, and a simpler, more
pure car would have been preferred. My question is: can
the whole system be ‘re-flashed’ to eliminate a lot of this
junk? I am old school, and my E-types (4) were easy to work
on, as were the Astons of old (3). Could gut the entire
system and rewire just what I wanted to work. Love the
looks and performance, but don’t like the ‘light show’ on
the dash.–

This is a fairly modern car and it is all controlled by
computers…there is no straightforward way around it, and
it does improve performance, fuel economy and emissions.

You can read about the electronic design philosophy, which
was cutting edge for its day on my website here:

Regarding this specific issue, the early ECUs were built
with substandard electrolytic capacitors that have a
penchant to leak after about 10-12 years under the
hood…this is a known problem.–

Also, get yourself and OBDII reader if you do not have one
already…working on these cars without one is just guesswork.–
