[xk8] Need advice on purchasing a used XK8

Hi,

Im a prospective first-time Jag owner whos very seriously
considering a used XK8. Ive done a fair amount of research
and am fairly clear on buying nothing earlier than a 2000,
one of which I’m actively checking out right now. However,
Im wondering if I should hold out for a used 2002, which
appeared to resolve many of the problems that people report
about the earlier models. Any suggestions as to what year
to buy and what to look for when shopping, particularly
concerning those years (2000-2002), would be much appreciated.–

Don’t eliminate an earlier car-- I bot my early 98 new, and
it’s been fine, a reliable performer. Weak places are front
wheel bearings, (replace at abt 60K miles to avoid problems)
and of course ensure the secondary tensioners are latest
version, metal body. With those two major identified
problem areas out of the way, they are great cars.

Before you buy any car of any year, be sure to inspect under
the right cam cover plus inside the air inlet tube. If
there is no crud in the inlet tube, that’s a good indication
of no significant engine blowby. This is especially
important if a Nikasil engine. And if you look under the
cam cover, you can inspect the secondary tensioner and get a
good idea of prior engine care. It should be clean, no
accumulations. Enjoy.–

Thanks! I’d be looking to use this as an every day driver
(well, fairly regularly, certainly) so am concerned by
stories of total engine failure, etc. I’ll let you know if
I make the the purchase.–

If I would by one today I would use a real time scanner to connect
to laptop (~$80) and check for fault codes or P1000 (this one
indiciate a recent reset, since new system check was not completed
yet). Then I also use it to check oxygen sensors voltage (if it
keeps constantly bellow 0.3/0.4 (once they are warm and reaches the
CL Closed loop) they are probably destroyed. Would used it to check
LTFT and STFT (likely emissions messed up if LTFT keeps outside the
range +/- 10%). If the STFT shows outside that range on idle expect
also vacuum leaks (again emissions). A good sense on Throttle
opening (as minimal with the key on, even with motor off, push the
pedal and check if it opens all, etc) and MAss Meter Flow (yet not
may be also helpfull. Idle soft ~600-700 rpm, etc. Or just bring it
to a Jag dealer and ask for an inspection, just in case.–

Hi, Pedro:

You seem very knowledgeable so heres a simple question for
you (and anyone else interested in replying). Assume all
things are equal, which would you get, a 2000 with 58000
miles or a 2002 with 73000? Neither is a Nikasil engine and
both have been well-maintained. The 2000 had problems (scne
fixed) with the top hydraulics or the rearview mirror, I
believe, as the leather has that splash pattern staining
from oil/fluid that Ive read other people suffered through
so will need to be repainted. Your thoughts?

Cheers!–

Hi,

Sorry not really an opinion, I just shared a lot of research I had
to do to understand specific codes I got, and how I realized the
dealer can easily reset them, etc. Regarding your options, honestly
I don’t know. I would believe that 2000 is cheaper and has less
mileage so maybe at the end it is a good option, though don’t take
this one very serious :)–
