[xk8] New owner question

Hi, I am the proud new owner of a 1996 XK8. I have a
question for the forum members. How do I find out if I have
an Alarm System/Anti Theft system installed. How can I check
this?–

Welcome to the Forum.

Assuming you have a remote fob for arming the car’s security system;
Lock the car with two presses of the red button. (Lock/Deadlock).
The hazards should flash in sympathy and possibly you will hear
a ‘beep’ - depending on country system.
Using the KEY (not remote) unlock the car and OPEN the door. If the
key is not put into the ignition and turned within 7 seconds, the
alarm should activate - (It’s noisy!) You can kill it with the
remote.
Anyway - that’s what my 99 XK8 does here in the UK. Yours may be
different. You might also try unlocking the boot/trunk with the key
when the system is armed.(Haven’t had the nerve to try that yet!).

Thanks for your help. I will try this once I get my remote
working. It appears to be faulty. A new battery did not help.–

Your remote may be an add-on that has not been matched to the
system which can be done by a dealer (expensive) or you can buy
instructions from ebay to diy. I have also read in the threads that
the buttons can go bad as corrosion mounts up behind them. It is
possible I think to take the remote apart to clean the terminals
behind the buttons. if you use a cleaning spray make sure its one
that does not attack plastic.

I would think if you just lock the door with the key, you will see
the smallest flash of the hazard light and then a small red
blinking light near the gear shifter - then the car has the alarm
on. If no such show, just lock the door with the key, then go and
open the trunk with the key. Open it and wait about 10 seconds, then
if horn is honking and lights flashing, you know alarm works. Then
just go and unlock the door and stick the key in the ignition and
turn on car. All noises stop. I am hoping I can get the remote to
work better. Pushing the button a bunch (I have new batteries) is
getting old. Good Luck.–
