[xk8] Radiator and Hoses on 97 XK8

Hi, I am about to get another radiator
and have a bunch of hoses and seals replaced (coolant system)
on my 97 XK8. I have records of it and it seems to
need various hoses and seals fixed fairly often. Any ideas
on why this is? 1) Factory assembled it better than the
dealer can fix it? 2) Bad design that puts a lots of stress
on the hoses and seals? 3) Hoses and seals are not top
quality material? I have a new generation water pump. I wish
I had a new generation of radiator and hoses!
The car rides great at 163,000 miles.
Thanks.

I am replying to myself. After talking to the dealer, it is
probably just the fact that I drive the car so much, it
undergoes lots of thermal cycles and simply falls apart
faster. Most cars have half the mileage.

I read one theory that the reason the water pumps failed was
secondary to the failing thermostat problem, which resulted
in overheating. The overheating then causes the pump
impeller to break up.

If this line of thought is correct then perhaps the hoses
bursting, bottom hose-to-thermostat housing clip failure etc
may be another area stressed by failing thermostats.

Perhaps worth replacing the thermostat while you’re in
there, if you haven’t already. It’s cheaper than some of
those hoses!

I’ve no evidence for this, it’s just a thought.

I have a 98 XJ8 (I lurk here because we share some components and
knowledge isn’t narrowly defined) and I believe, after having large
water hoses pop off, that is is due to the thermostats sticking
closed and pressure building up to the point of overcoming the spring
clips. The early 8-cylinder thermostats were not “robust”, to use the
jag word, from the TSB and were superseded three times, I think. Get
the newest manufactured thermostat you can find, replace the water
pump to the new white-impeller model if yours is not that one
(there’s a TSB) and as an extra measure put one (or two) worm clamps
on the hoses and get rid of those crappy, designed-for-ease-of-
manufacture-only spring clamps.

Best, Brian

Thanks guys. They replaced a bunch of stuff. One goofy thing
was probably the biggest hose I can see, simply bumps
against the housing for one othe electrical fans, and it
chewed a hole into the hose. This was the obvious leak I
found myself. All these goofy seals leaked on various
plastic parts, so I knew
they probably had to be changed sooner or later so might as
well get it over with. I know the pump is the newer version,
they just inspected it and put it back in. I’ll check
various clamps and the what versions of thermostats, …
were put in.
The hose bumping on the housing just seems bogus, and I can
see that it will eventually happen again. Maybe I’ll cushion
the hose or the fan housing with something. Currently, it
all looks great! Well, for $3,300 I hope so!! Party On.–
