[xk8] SECURITY LOCK-DOWN

I bought a '98 XK8 2 days ago. Changed the oil yesterday,
and parked it. This morning I went to open the drivers
door, which opened fine (indexed), and then opened the
trunk. The next thing I know, the security light is
flashing red by the Park Selector - and all power has been
disabled. I can even close the doors because they won’t
index (drop down). I must have activated some kind of
Security Death LOCK-DOWN. The driver’s door lock will only
rotate clockwise, but not counter-clockwise - so I can’t
deactivate as instructed by the manual. Does anyone no
what’s going on here. I fear it’s something that can only
be resolved after an expensive tow to the Jag dealer.
Thanks,

Do not know exactly but I would disconnect the battery for several minutes.
Then leave it reboot everything and see what happens.

Will still need to reset windows, probably reprogram radio and seat memory.

Most probably a dead battery that was loaded via an external
charger just for selling the car…

Nothing to do with the security system, IMHO.

My 99 has been doing the same randomly for the two years I’ve owned
it. Wife was very unhappy camper when we were towed the first time
(’‘I knew you shouldn’t have bought this stupid car’’). Jag dealer
could find nothing but hit me up for a new battery and diagnostic
time. Didn’t solve the problem though. So now I just carry a wrench
and disconnect the battery ground for 10secs. Everything is fine
afterwards and I just have to go through the window game. The only
time it’s a pain is whem it rains.–

Is it possible that we are married to the same woman? I
have gotten that quote from her for almost every car I have
bought

Check if your ground link (directly from battery, in the trunk) is
well attached on car side, and if it is not getting worm when you
switch on the lights with the engine off…

TC -
Should the ground wire be warm or cool if the lights are on? I
notice that when I disconnect it from the battery after driving it
is always warm. By the way, this shutdown always occurs (randomly)
only when I shut off the car. I open the driver’s door and the
window won’t go down, so off to the boot to disconnect the battery.
The ground wire will be quite warm. Once the car resets all is fine
for a while until the next random time I turn off the car and it
goes dead.

I spent months trying to solve a similar problem on my '99
coupe and documented the fix here (and elsewhere). It may be
worth checking your car.

I found that the poitive lead connection from the battery to
the two X 250 amp fuses had a slightly loose ringtag
connector. (Although it felt O.K. on a cursory waggle).

I remade the connection using a hammer(!) and then solder
and it’s been fine for the last 4 years.

Suspect my wife must be from your wife’s side of the
family…

It depends what you call warm, but it should be as cold as
possible. If it’s getting hot it means that plenty of your good
current is heating the air instead of powering up your car’s
equipements… Given your symptoms, I’d replace that wire asap.

Hi in any electrical system cars or otherwise
Cables should not get warm, usualy a sign of a loose
connection eventualy it will burn out.
You would not expect for example the lead on your kettle or
electric drill to get warm.–

Last night I pulled the suspect battery and took it to the auto
parts store, where they ran a combination 45 mintue test/charge.
At the end the battery was declared ‘‘GOOD.’’ I re-installed
and ‘‘all systems are go’’ - for now. I’m now concerned about the
longevity of the fix as commented by others in this thread. So I’ll
keep a close eye on it. But I really appreciate the feedback and
assistance from Bleasie and others. The Jag fraternity is good
bunch of guys! Safe Driving - until next time…
