I am thinking about buying a used 99 XK8 with very low
mileage. Any ideas on how much maintenance costs a year
after the extended warranty runs out? One statement in a
forum is that ‘‘they cost money to drive’’ - any general ideas
of how much annually would be appreciated.

any car cost money to drive… the XK8 are not more costly than anything
else similar like a 500SL.
if you buy the car thru a Jaguar Dealer, make sure it has the factory Select
Edition warranty, 6/100, hard to beat.

Regarding how much it costs to operate and that it would be expensive?
Hogwash. Get the car from a Jag dealer with a select warr like we did, pay
a little more for it if you have to, and ride for … free! Our 99 XK8
bought 13 months ago has been a dream. Hasn’t cost a penny in repairs.
Just a oil and filter. Our local dealer actually gave us a free loaner car
when it needed some warranty work! The car isn’t my cup of tea, too
feminine for me and I don’t like the wood steering wheel, but my wife LOVES
her car, and I love the looks of it to death. If I had bought one for me,
it would be black on black. Manly!
Or that silver with black leather.
Go for it. You will not be sorry. Definitely take it on a long test drive
to make sure this is the car for you, though, first.

Steve makes two excellent points regarding the XK8.
Buy from the dealer and get the Select Edition warranty. The coverage
can’t be beat and warranty to 100,000 miles or 6 years from in service date
is the best in the business.
I think this is the most critical consideration. Take the car for an
extended test drive and be sure it is the car for you. I can’t count the
number of XKs we get back as low mileage trades simply because the owner
became frustrated with either the ride quality or interior room. The cars
are great for their intended purpose but a hot rod XJ8 they are not. If you
prefer the cushy ride try the XJ. Even the XJR is a little rough for some
people, we just got a 2002 XJR100 on trade with only 6,000 miles on it
because the owner said he “couldn’t handle the performance”. Personally I
can’t wait to start getting the Super V8s back in on trade. The ride can’t
be beat and the performance is nearly identical to the XJR, a real sleeper
in every sense of the word.
