[xk8] Truth in Advertising?

As the owner of a 2002 XK8 and a 2001 XJ8L (my 6th and 7th Jags since my
first Series ll in 1974) I read with interest the advertisement in the
Winter 2002 edition of Jaguar Magazine, that the 2003 XJ8 enjoys the 4.0
liter 280 horsepower V8. This issue of Jaguar also introduces the new
2004 XJ8 with the 4.2 liter 294 horsepower V8. Hmm… the same magazine,
one year earlier advertised the 2003 XK8/XJ8 4.0 liter engine as having
290 horsepower, as do all the XK8 and XJ8 sales brochures since the
introduction of the AJ-V8. What happened? Was the 290 horsepower engine
just an example of creative accounting? Is Jaguar so shameless that they
intentionally misstate the horsepower of the outmoded engine just to
make the new model appear more enhanced?

I would say yes, there is a bit of creativity when publishing the
performance numbers from Jaguar. I think Jaguar has ceased being
conservative with the numbers and is taking the perfect, ideal environment
results to sell cars, since HP always attracts attention…

Remember the 400bhp S-Type R? That’s now been revised down as well.
