[xk8] Want to buy a jag

I have an opportunity to buy a '99 XK8 with 65K miles looks great
and drives great. The owner has changed that infamous timing
problem this model goes through around 70K miles and I can get it
for about $12k. I spoke to Jag mechanics and they say stay away
from that model because of the Ford engineering and some say buy it
because of that reason. As Jag owners I’d like a truely honest
opinion. These cars look great but I like any other buyer don’t
want to buy a car that’s going to be in Joe’s garage more than
mine. Looking for honest answers…–

If you’ll check with autotraderonline for XK8s under 75K miles, the average
price for the 1999 models is around $23,000. Anything that’s being offered
for half of average is either the best deal of your life or is a surprise
waiting for a new owner. It’s hard to imagine a Jag owner selling his/her
vehicle for half of what it’s worth, though… maybe a flood car?

At that price, it’s worth it to get a PPI from a Jag tech or dealer. As
for the models themselves, my 2000 Coupe XK8 has been one of the most
trouble-free cars I’ve ever had.

I too am looking to purchase an XK8 (convertible)and after as much
research as I can do through this site I am now terrified to buy
one. I am still obsessed with the car however and am very torn.
I only hear of the problems people experience with Jags and not the
positive side.
There’s no talking someone out of their love affair that’s for sure
but I DO feel like I’m about to enter into a relationship with a
mistress both beautiful and trecherous. Help. Mark–

Exactly what do you expect to find on a forum such this? People usually
come here for help with a problem. A lot come in for one problem then drop
off the face of the earth. So, of course you are going to find a lot of
problems here. Do you think everyone is going to come on here and say how
trouble free and what not it has been? No… they are too busy enjoying the
car.

Worried about timing chain and nikasil issues? Get a 00+. They are really
great cars, but all you see here are mostly problems.

I have now owned my 2000 XK8 for about 6 months. In that
time I have only had one guy I didn’t know, say nice car. I
have had numerous women say really nice car.

I have purchased my wife cars before, but I have only owned
trucks. This was the first car I bought for me. I truely
love the ability to step on the pedal and leave most any car
in the dust.

I come to this site for help on the odd problem here or
there to save myself alot of money when it’s something simple.

Like mention already. look at the 2000 and newer version.
Alot safer from ‘‘problems’’. Then just drop the top and
enjoy the stares from everyone.

I’ve got a 2000 XK8. It is a very good car with a beautiful
design, while I would not classify it as a true sports car; it is a
luxury car with alot of horsepower and speed. I paid a small
fortune for it.

Unfortunately, bad drivers have a tendency to crash fast cars.
That is why fast (sports) cars are a risk in the used car market.
I would be very leery of any XK8 for sale around $10G. Be sure to
get the registration number and do a background check to see if it
has been in any crashes. Get the service record, too. Bottom line
is: many badly crashed cars are available in the used-car market
place - some of like Porsches, BMW’s & Jaguars are not worth buying
because they’ve been bent out out shape - not only the bodies, but
oftentimes the frames and undercarriage, too.–
