[xk8] What's The Best Tires for 97 XK8?

Hi,
I am a new owner of a 97 XK8 and will need to replace the tires
shortly, the car seems to have some vibration at 65 and 70, tires
have 19,000 miles on them. Any recommendations on the brand that
will perform the best?

Thanks in advance and thanks for the previous messages on the XK8.

I’d stick with what Jaguar chose… P Zeros.

Pesonally I really like them, I have them on all my cars ( XKR XKE and
XJR ) performance is excellent.

Vibration is most likely balancing if it’s in that speed range, if you still
have enough thread on them, it’s worth trying to get them balanced…

Shop aroung a bit, I get mines from a small independent shop, $ 100 a piece
cheaper than the dealer.

I’ll second Pascal’s opinion on the P Zero. There are, however, two issues
you have to be aware of.

First, they wear fairly quickly. The compound is very soft and our cars are
heavy. On the XJR, rears last about 10-12,000 and fronts 15-17,000 miles.
I don’t even bother to rotate them with this kind of wear rate. The newest
P Zero (the P Zero Rosso) is supposed to wear longer. You may want to ask
about this tire. Do not, however, get them with the red lettering – it
looks terrible on Jag (IMHO).

Second, (and not an issue for Pascal in South Florida) is that these are
spring, summer, fall tires only. The compound doesn’t stick well in cold
temperatures but you can drive them if all it gets is cold. Forget about
them in snow and slush, however. If you live anyplace where there is a real
winter and you will be driving the car in those conditions, you will need
winter tires and wheels. We drive the Subaru a lot in the winter.

Check out prices at www.tirerack.com. Even if you don’t buy there, some
locals will match or come close on TR’s prices.-----Original Message-----

The XKR comes with Continental ContiSportContacts. Depending on your
driving habits, these may work well for you. I’m very pleased with
the ride, handling, and wear characteristics. I don’t baby the car,
and at 11,000 miles, they are wearing very evenly, and have a lot of
tread depth left. I’m estimating that I’ll get at least 30K miles out
of this set.

yes, they changed in 2002, wonder why, maybe because the PZeros are softer
and people don’t like to change tires aver 15k

Acc. to TireRack, the Contisport will be discontinued and replaced by the
contisport 2, which cost 75% more ! but it does have a treadwear rating of
280… twice the PZeros which tells me it’s a harder compound which will not
grip as well…

yes, I noticed that when it get cold here… 45 deg… I loose traction
much faster when they’re cold…

The Rosso have a 240 rating, I wonder if they grip as well

In reply to a message from TNT sent Sat 20 Jul 2002:

Hi there fellow pouncers! This is the first time I have bopped
over to look at the XK8 forum and felt I just had to throw in my
2 cents worth about this here tire question. I have only had my
96’ VDP for about two months but upon initially freaking out over
what it feels like to have wide tires (18’‘x8’’ rims) and go over
freeway ruts (whoa!!!) I immediately went to work trying to
alleviate that problem and so the first thing I did was get rid
of the Pirellis P4000s that were on it. I could tell they were
really sticky but they really seem to grab every rut and judging
by the tire wear from drive wheel to non drive wheel, it looks
like those things wear like there’s no tomorrow. I can’t imagine
having a XKR and feeding the cat with tires every few months -
OW! So anyway, after reading all the tire rack customer reports,
it seems like most people are not going to buy Pirellis again
after having them the first time. It clearly seemed that most
people were extremely happy with the Bridgestone S-03 pole
position which the local dealer here in Portland OR matched the
price of. So after putting on these tires, I took the cat out in
the pouring down rain and those tires grabbed excellent in the
wet. I am very impressed. I’ve bombed into some (dry) corners
doing 70 and couldn’t even hear any squealing and felt absolutely
zero break-loose. So for what it’s worth, I saved a hell of alot
of money over buying Michelins and I’m sure over Pirellis too.
Hope that helps anyway.

It’s not every few months; but with two hungry cats, it sure seems like it
sometimes.

I have a lot of friends who swear by the S03 Pole Position tires – and even
more who cried when the discontinued the S02. I may try the S03 on the XJR
if I ever get the fronts and rears to wear out at the same time. But, the
price difference is between the SO3 and the P Zero is generally only about
$20 a tire ($199 vs. $214 in the XJR stock size on Tire Rack today) – so
that really isn’t a factor.

For the XKR (and the list content), I think that I will be afraid to go away
from the P Zeros. The XKR (pre-Contis) came shod with 245/45 P Zero
Directionales on the front and 255/45 Asimmetricos on the rear. I am sure
that the Jaguar engineers took the tread and other differences into account
in making the suspension settings on the CATS system. Similarly, I am
confident that the later cars with the Contis have the suspension tweaked
for them.

The only real problem that I have with the P Zeros is how balance sensitive
they are. I have had to rebalance the XJR every so often. The weights move
about a 1/4 inch; but gee can I feel the difference.
