I need new Tires for my 2005 XKR with 20 inch wheels. What do you
all recommend? I have 255 35 20 on front and 285 30 20 on back.
they are pirellis. Should I look for the same ones or different for
a smoother ride. I am looking more for comfort. Thanks

On my Porsche I have Michelin PS2 which stick to the road and are super
smooth (round and low noise). They are expensive and have low UTQG but they
are truly high performance, don’t know about the PS3 yet. The Hankook V12
evo K100 are great at about 100.00 a piece cheaper than the PS2. The two
come in 255 35 20 and 285 30 20 sizes (per TireRack). The latest Falken,
Bridgestone (but cost as much as PS2), Continental and Dunlop will provide a
smooth ride also. I have General UHP on my XK8, they are great for getting
the grocery, lol. The Hankook are newer technology and better on all counts
but slightly more expensive. Last year I drove a Cayman on PS2 and later
another one on V12. I noticed the difference right away, more grip and
slighty smoother ride with the PS2. One point for the PS2, they are NOT
directional. The wider thread has to be on the outside.

Holden,
I bought a set of Yokohama Advan Sport for my '02 XKR in the same
sizes as yours last summer. After about 5,000 miles of driving, I
am pleased with them so far. They are pretty quiet on the freeway
and provide excellent handling and braking, even in the wet. I
imagine they will get noisier with age.
With the low profile 20’’ tires, these do give about as smooth a
ride as you are going to get.–

Holden, tirerack.com has a feature in which the users can
rate the tires they have purchased. I bought new tires for
my XK8 a while back and I chose the Continental
ExtremeContact DWS tires based on the stellar reviews other
user gave the tires and the price. So far I’ve been very
pleased with the Continentals. They are super-sticky, quiet,
and seem to be wearing very slowly.
The ‘‘DWS’’ stands for ‘‘Dry, Wet, Snow’’ Each tire has the
letters DWS in the tread at various spots. the depth of each
letter is different, and it tells you what the tire is good
for. For example, on my car I can still see all three
letters, so the tires are god for dry, wet, and snow
conditions. At the tread wears down the ‘‘S’’ will disappear
and they will only be good for dry and wet conditions. Then
the ‘‘W’’ will wear away and they will only be good for dry
conditions.
If you don’t drive your car in the winter, or you live in a
warmer climate, Continental also makes a similar tire they
call the ExtremeContact DW. It’s a summer tire. By the way,
the DWSs are very popular and a lot of distributors are sold
out. Expect to wait a week or three after you order the
tires.–
