[xk8] XK8 Steering wheel adjustment

The electronic adjustment on the steering column of my 97 XK8 works
in the up and down mode but not in the telescoping mode. I hear the
motor that controls this running, but there is no movement.

Any ideas on how difficult this is to remedy (dealer fix or OK to
attempt at home?) before I start stripping things down.

If anyone has encountered this before and remedied it, steps to
follow would be very appreciated.–

This is a common problem. The motor for the ‘‘reach’’ goes
past the limit and breaks the cable. I was given a price of
$250 from the dealer for the kit for this repair, with an
estimated $250 labor, also dealer price at $89 an hour.
Since it wasn’t needed I decided against repairing it.

I have no idea how difficult the repair would be, but
working under the dash and steering column isn’t any fun,
unless of course you enjoy standing on your head.

If the reach isn’t needed turn the switch, on the left side
of the column closest to the wheel, off.

Hope this helps, and good luck.–

Thanks Maxpen

Time to get a workshop manual and see how easy this might be.
Overall position of the wheel is not a problem, but moving it 2
inches further out will make it more comfortable (it seems to be
all the way back to the dash at present).

You are right that working upside down under the dash is not
appealing tho’ Once did this on a Fiat X1/9, changing the brake
cyclinder which was located inside the car under the dash. Not nice–

Had such problems also, after disconnecting the whole thing for one
year or so as I did not need it (was made for people with big
stomachs IMHO ;-), and estimated it was an uncessary drain on the
battery.

In my case, it was apprently the micro-switch inside the ignition
keyhole that was not working properly. Heard the noise of the engine
like you, but either vertical or horizontal was not moving. By
inserting the key only halfway and playing with it, I could bring
the steering wheel to come to the registered position. Same applyed
when turning off.

Had to do this procedure for a few months, and now the thing is
working again fully alone… Don’t ask me why…

Brgds,

T.–

Thanks - will try the key jiggling thing this evening.

if anyone has any clues to the where-abouts of the X300 article, it
would be appreciated. Have searched back to end 2005 so far with no
luck.–

Well, key jiggling was not the answer, but access and dis-assembly
of the unit is not actually that bad. Reason for not functioning
was that the short fat cable linking the motor to the column
adjustment mechanism was sheared at both ends (there is a narrow
square key at each end that locates into the motor and the column).

Just need to track down a new cable and this should be working
again.

Once the motor is removed, there is access to a manual adjuster
(13mm short socket) which allowed me to wind the steering wheel out
for a much more comfortable driving position.–

Does anyone have any experience with using 3rd party rotors on an XKR or
other Jag. I just ordered a pair of front cross-drilled rotors from a
company called Brake Engineering in Germany. Cheaper than the stock brakes
plus cross-drilled. Let me know if there is cause for concern.

Hello,

I have Brembo drilled on both my XK8 and XJ40 with excellent results. I
purchased them on ebay and the company is located in Toronto. They also sell
STR (I think) brand but I recommend the slightly more expensive Brembo.

In reply to a message from Rob Lalonde sent Fri 12 May 2006:

Rob,

I haven’t used them but, over here in the UK, if you go into a
parts shop and ask for brake discs/rotors it’s highly likely that
they’ll sell you Brake Engineering products, unless you specify a
particular brand. They have a very good reputation.

They have a facility in Swansea, Wales and one can go there and
purchase a set of rotors for any vehicle but, they won’t do mail
order. Perhaps you would be kind enough to send me the web
address or email address of the German facility.

Many thanks.–
