Newly aquired 140 coupe…been off road for many years…my question is why are the battery lead terminals in the boot (trunk if American) ??

Pure guesses … the battery compartment(s) rusted out, so this was a hack solution, or the car was raced and the battery was relocated to change weight distribution (seems the spare wheel could not have been stowed).
Another guess - PO wanted to fit a bigger battery due to difficult starting in cold weather.

Thanks Clive. Battery boxes are intact, but car does have some rally history…so maybe it was a weight issue?
