the battery charge light is on, what could cause that condition?
Failed alternator would be my first guess.

Check the voltage with a meter at the battery when the car is running.
Also check that the alternator belt is not slipping. It would normally squeal at startup.Put paint marks across the harmonic balancer and alternator belt to make sure it is ok.
