1997 XK8 wouldn't run

Took it to a non-Jag mechanic who did a compression test and got ~40 psig in every cylinder then did an oil change and cranked the engine and it ran. He claimed the “lifters stocked with oil” and changing the oil fixed it. Makes no sense to me. Any ideas?

Sounds like his compression gauge sticks at 40 psi.

Did he do a second compression test once it was started? It could be that the engine had ‘bore wash’ where the oil seal to the rings gets washed off and the engine looses a bit of compression.

The odd thing was his idea that the lifters got full of oil and failed the valves open. Sounds ridiculous to me.

Considering they are an interference engine! Change your mechanic.

I am pretty familiar with the Jaguar XK doc 6 but not the V8. 40lb compression sounds way to low for me. I would expect it to be up around 120. I think you need to take your car to someone who is familiar with the later model Jags.

This reminds me somewhat of a once common trick played on trainees, check the sparkplugs on that diesel lad, I’d like to know where these troublesome “lifters” are
