Can anyone tell me if the 4.0 L engine has Variable Valve Timing?
Also does the 4.0 L engine run hydraulic lifters?

No, as to Variable Valve Timing. IIRC, Jag didn’t come out with that feature until the XJ8s (“X-350”?) came along. It also, BION, has mechanical lifters, hence why the lash should be adjusted on them every ____ miles (I forgot the recommended interval 
). I really don’t know why Jag did not favor hydraulic lifters (anyone? 
). Heck, I remember the 1.9 liter straight 4-cyl. engine in my '72 Opel (GT) used them. But then, it also had that nifty “cam in head” design, too.
