What could be considered a normal break in time on an engine??

500 miles usually does the deed.

If your using a break in oil how long should that stay in ?

As long as it takes to cover 500 miles. Then, switch to whatever poison you choose.

I put 1,000 miles on my rebuilt engine being sure to vary the speed, keeping the revs down initially, avoiding jackrabbit starts, etc. That took about a month. After that 1,000 miles, I switched from the Castrol 20W-50 conventional I used for break-in to Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic.
