C- Type Heads/ Cam Cover Trivia

Dear Experts,

Part of my message to Jim Warren re: cam covers

" Having read your message and looked at Porter’s Pics again, I’ve come to the
conclusion that anything goes as far as originality is concerned regarding
“proper” cam covers for “C” type heads, assuming that your cam covers are
in fact original as they sound like they are, right? The casting # for my
oddball “C” type exhaust side cam cover is C-6728
The 2 stud bosses closest to the front are 1" high from the machined
underside and the stud boss at the front/top of the casting is 9/16" high.
Other cam cover casting I have measured from my bone-yard all seem to have a
common dimension of 1/2" for the stud boss height."

Can anyone enlighten us to the correct style of cam cover castings for XK
140 “C” type heads, 1" stud boss or 1/2" please? Thanks,
regards, John.

Sounds like I’m buying into the end of this line of discussion, however I
wasn’t aware that C-Type Cam-Covers were an area of debate.
John, I think you will find on closer examination that your 1" high
stud boss C-Type exhaust Cam-Cover is in fact part # C.6723 (the inlet
side pair is C.6722), and these covers necessitate longer studs C.6726/
C.6727. These are in fact genuine “C-Type” (as in the racing car)
engine Cam-Covers, as used in 1951.
The C-Type cam-covers, as used on XK140MC engines were simply standard
XK140 (and late 120/early 150) C.7185/ C.7186 cam-covers, drilled to take
the C-Type badges, and thus now identified by new part numbers C.9738/
C.9739, and these of course have the ordinary 1/2" high stud boss height.
Not a case of “anything goes”

Roger,
you are correct, I didn’t have the casting # right, it is in fact C-6723.
“Closer examination” revealed this as the last digit was poorly formed and
as a matter of fact, I do have an incomplete 1951 engine in the boneyard-
#W-1654-8.
Could anyone connect this engine to a specific car- wouldn’t be a C-type
racing engine with that # I thought and BTW, what were the C-type
competition engine numbers, did they run in series with the XK 120 numbers
or were they another group?
J.W. and I were discussing details of respective cam cover assemblies re:
our XK 140 C type heads but from the responses by George, Rob, Ron and
yourself, I conclude that the offending casting #C-6723 will now go back
into the boneyard and I’ll be fitting the correct castings (and possibly
the repro badges that I got from Moss many moons ago).
Thanks for the precise answer to the original question folks, JM
