Charging ports on Delinair (or any) AirCon unit

I’m refitting a Delinair AC unit to my Mk2 - replacing the old York compressor with a Sanyo. Charging ports on the York were at the compressor head.

Must the ports be at the compressor head?

I’ve seen at least on installation where the charging ports were at the evaporator box in the trunk. Is this an acceptable practice?

The charging port can be anywhere in the line.

The best place for the high side charge port is between the compressor and condenser The suction charge port is better if its at least a foot from the compressor. The old York could take a lot of abuse, the suction reed valves don’t break as easy as some of the newer compressors.
