Clever re-work for corroded blocks

I saw this clever re-work for corroded block on Instagram from an outfit called Chesman Motorsport, who appear to do some superb work.

The corroded material is machined away on a CNC mill, leaving a clean pocket. The brass inserts are (presumably) thermally fitted, then machined down during decking operations…very nice.

We have brazed corroded blocks. Works a treat.

That’s very satisfying.

I love brazing: it was the first type of welding that my Dad taught me.

It is…Zen.

Wish I’d met your Dad.

I’m shit at brazing.

The secret?

At the correct temp, the brazing runs toward the heat. On thin material, a very small flame, and on cast (properly preheated), kind of the same.

When I was learning to repair gold jewelry (at age 15) one of the things that my mentor drummed into me was that solder will not flow across an open space and that it always runs toward the hotter piece or segment.
