[collectibles] 1:18 22ct gold XJ220

I have just come across a Model XJ220 thats 22ct gold. The car
comes with the authenticity certificate by goldshield collectables.
it is No. 148 out of 10,000 produced and still has its ‘care for
model’ guide stating the surface plating is 22ct gold. it comes in
a BRG leather bound box with the jaguar leaper and logo on the top
in gold. The car appears to originally be a Maisto model turned
gold plated. the car sits on a wooden stand with an xj220 badge in
gold as a plaque. Any idea on what these are worth? the car is in
good condition.

Thank you for your time

Hi Adam,

I’d echo Tony Bailey’s response. Sadly, the 10k produced by Maisto
seriously over-estimated the market for these models and the unsolds were
dumped at low cost, which dragged down the price of those that were already
out there. At one stage, they were being offered within the trade at less
than 5 each.

Another factor that erodes the value of the Maisto brand and the XJ 220
series in particular is that they produced literally scores of thousands of
XJ 200 models (over 100,000 at a conservative estimate). As well as the
mainstream offerings in a variety of scales and colour variations, there
were also innumerable “special editions” such as yours.

The price Tony got for his is about right. A dealer might offer you around
10 nowadays, but only might!

Regards,

Ian Cooling
