[collectibles] Knockolds prints?

Maybe I’m asking the impossible, but is there any place I can buy Roy
Knockolds prints or even originals?

Thanks,

Daniel Thompson

Daniel:

Been there, done that. You are asking the impossible. But, the good news is
that there’s a Nockolds painting coming up at Ian Cooling’s next auction,
he’s also a good one to ask:

http://www.jaguarautomobilia.com/jacpa4.html

Thackwell has a folio of prints available:

http://www.nockolds.com/

Finally, John Kluge has a repro Jag poster, which is about the only thing
that fits the budget:

I’ll bet a dollar to a donut that Tony Bailey probably has one he’ll part
with, but it will be enormously expensive. And since you’ve brought up “the
auction”, I’ve been waiting for one to happen for the past two or three
years; I’m now a skeptic.

What on earth makes you think that? Yes I have a number but not for parting
with at the moment!

Also two originals, one is a charcoal/goache drawing of the mock-up for the
colour painting that appears on the cover of the 2nd volume of Andrew Whyte’s
Jaguar Sports and Racing Cars volume. The other is a large water colour of a
blue 3.5L SS Jaguar Saloon on an open road with a family onboard.

Caution on moving around the Nockolds site - it’s also linked in with Adult
sites and you’ll have Javascript driven xxx windows opening up all over your
desktop that won’t go away… The root of the problem is at
http://www.nockolds.com/m2cyc.htm which is where the original links (that no
longer work) to the material and prints etc they do sell were.

Don’t be too sceptical about the auction never appearing. I’m sure Ian will
comment further when he spots this.

Hi Patrick,

I am reely, reely getting there!

Won’t bore you with the stuff about the break-up of my marriage, need to
find new home, new premises for JAC, loss of all data and programmes on hard
disc during house move, etc. Suffice to say I have written to all vendors
this week to say that I have got myself back to where I was before the data
loss (i.e. about two thirds through the catalogue) and am rolling towards
completion.

My dilemma is whether to put the catalogue out before Christmas, or in
mid-January after everyone has got back to work. The reason for the
hesitation is that, by and large, people are looking to spend their money
things other than my Postal Auction at Christmas time. And, no, it would
not be possible to run and close the auction and get lots back to successful
bidders before Christmas - thus helping solve the eternal present problem.

Early responses (spoke to a number of people at the viewing for Bonhams and
Brooks the last tranche of the Motor & Autocar archives this morning) tend
to plump either for post-Christmas or are happy to leave it to me. After
all, following your (very valid!) point, what’s an extra month after a wait
of coming up to three years!

And, yes, that superb and very rare, original, privately-commissioned,
signed Nockolds oil painting of a Mark VIII or IX running along a country
lane is still in there and hangs on the wall behind me as I type. Those who
have not seen it, check out my website. I also aim to get pictures of other
interesting lots on to the site over the next couple of weeks. These will
include the factory-issued Nockolds print of the record-breaking Montlhery
XK 120 fhc running high on the banking at dawn - one of my favourite Jaguar
images.

Indeed, I do have to say that one of the nicest aspects of a troublesome
year when I had finally hoped, but failed, to get the JAC Postal Auction
back on track, has been the extraordinary loyalty of the sellers. Even
after such an inordinately lengthy delay, not one single lot has been
withdrawn - and some of these guys have been waiting the full three years.
Who, in my position, could ask for a greater vote of confidence!

Best regards to you, Patrick - and everyone else reading this,

Ian

Ian, I am truly sorry to hear of the myriad of problems you’ve had. I
personally think you’re way too late for Christmas. Set your sights on a
doable target date, say next spring; April or May.

About those sites, Tony, from your “research”, which one did you like the
best? ;-)========================

Thanks Mike, I had seen all those by doing internet searches. I’ve got a
copy of the repro poster offered by Kluge. Actually quite nice.

I recently joined Ian Cooling’s “JAC”, so hopefully I’ll get a copy of the
auction catalog when it comes out. But let me ask a silly question, what is
the estimated selling price of a painting like the one of the MkVII-IX at
night being offered? Somebody throw a number at me!

I’ve recently bought a couple of prints by an artist who is local to me, and
quite a nice guy to boot! I feel that, like fine wine, he is improving with
age and much of his work is directly comparable with the best.

http://www.racing-art.com

Bruce told me he would make more money if he painted classic American racing
scenes, but he loves Jaguars and drives an XK120 himself, so he can’t bring
himself to stop painting our favorite cars! He is very knowledgeable in all
areas of Jaguar history and racing.

I spoke with him at length about Knockolds work and threw down a challenge
for him to paint a LeMans scene, perhaps a C-type at dusk or dawn. If he
does take up the challenge, I put in my dibs to buy the original.

Did you find my posters page on Jag-lovers? There are a few Nockolds in
there. I do have some spare original 50s posters with Nockolds contributions
but they’ll almost certainly go on the dedicated Jaguar automobilia auction
web site that is currently under test to get it going.

There’ll also be a copy of the catalogue on the web site. The Mk VIII/IX
painting is likely, I guess, to reach at least, more likely well into, four
figures. There is a lot of interest in it and the forward lighting effects
are really well executed when you look at it ‘in the flesh’ although I’m not
sure I’d personally keep the frame it currently lives in. It’s oil of course

  • a watercolour at a recent auction reached just under UK1000 after all the
    extras were paid.

Shame your artist friend has sold the original of the 774RW (1955 Le Mans)
painting - the current owner of the car would probably have been interested
and he lives near me. Think I saw Chris Phillips stand (or someone who paints
very similar material) at either Goodwood or Beaulieu this year as I
remember asking about the availability of the original painting at the time.
Thackwell also had a stand at Beaulieu.

Hi Daniel,

The estimate for the Mk VII/IX Nockolds is 1000-1200 and, like Tony Bailey,
I shall be surprised if it doesn’t fetch more. Original Nockolds Jaguar oil
paintings seldom appear on the open market.

I was today at the Bonhams & Brooks auction of the final tranche of the
Autocar and Motor archives in London. A water-colour by Autocar staff
painter Gordon Horner of the Bueb/Flockhart Ecurie Ecosse D Type at Le Mans
in 1957 fetched 1400 on the hammer. Add commission and taxes and you are
up around 1700 (say, US$2400 or C$3800). Of course, a Mark VIII/IX in a
country lane is not such a sexy subject or venue, but it is in oils. Also,
Nockolds’ reputation stands higher than Horner’s and he has a special link
with Jaguar cars because of his lengthy tenure as artist of choice for the
company during much of the fifties and into the sixties. That link means
that most of his distinctive Jaguar images were commissioned by the company
and that’s where they stay. This is one of the reasons why so few of his
Jaguar originals come onto the market.
