[concours] Dunlop tires

Anybody out there with an original 1966 vintage Dunlop 185-15 SP41 radial
tire? If so, what is the speed rating, if any?

Alan

Dear Alan
With such an 35 years old tire for safety reasons I wouldn’t recommend to
drive fast anymore, also when the speed index indicates more.

Best regards

Which brings up a good point: why are you asking this question? If you are
considering mounting 35 year old tires on your E-type for anything else but
sitting on the show field, don’t!

If you are consider buying a set of the new SP41’s that Dunlop now sells for
originality lovers, then don’t worry because they are made with modern
technology, methods and materials.

I have a question concerning tires. Looking at many pictures that Jaguar have
taken of their cars, I have not seen any shown with white wall tires or tires
showing a white stripe. (I was not sure of the proper name for the tires with
a thin white stripe.) Are these acceptable in concours events or would the
use of these be frowned upon? I should mention that my car is a 86 cranberry
coloured XJ6 Sovereign. I am just at the point of purchasing tires for my new
pepperpots so I would appreciate your responses.
Bob.

Bob,
I’m nearly positive that white-stripe tires were standard fitment on all USA
bound cars, optional for all other markets. As far as concours regulations,
no matter. So long as the size is correct, any brand is OK, as is
whitewall, whitestripe, red stripe, blackwall…

Or so I’ve been told !

FWIW (I know you didn’t ask for my crummy 2 cents !), I don’t like
whitewalls on the XJ’s. But, a white stripe (oh, let’s say 15mm or less)
is quite attractive.

Doug. Even so. Your opinion is value and your input greatly appreciated.

Daniel:

Just my natural curiosity I guess - must be my Germanic ancestry. The
Classic Range tire now made by Dunlop is the 185HR15 SP Sport, presumably
good to 130mph if you have what it takes.

Alan

My original SP41 in the boot says “HR” after it. From memory the “H” means a
130 m.p.h. speed rating.
